In recent years, the choreography of outdoor space has changed. Meetings migrate outside. Coffee breaks become working sessions. A quick conversation stretches into an hour with a laptop open and a bag at one’s feet. The postures are looser and more fluid—often upright, leaning, perched between movement and pause. With Link Rail, Landscape Forms extends the logic of its acclaimed Link seating system to meet that shift, introducing standing height as a new layer of spatial possibility.

Developed in collaboration with designer Jess Sorel, Link Rail doesn’t abandon the DNA of the original. It elevates it. The same angles, radii and kit-of-parts clarity translates into bar-height surfaces that fluidly sketch space at standing level. The intent was continuity rather than reinvention, so designers can move seamlessly between seated and standing elements within a single, coherent language.

Two surface widths shape distinct experiences. A slim rail top invites the casual lean—a place to rest a coffee, exchange a few words, watch the life of a plaza unfold. A wider bar top encourages longer stays—informal dining, collaborative work, pulling up a stool for evening gathering. Both can be configured with inline wood tops for crisp, linear runs or piano-key tops that unlock arcs, circles and serpentine forms. What might once have required custom fabrication can now emerge from a standardized palette of straight, 90°, 45° and radiused modules.

In terms of space definition, Link Rail can delineate the edge of a terrace, trace a circulation path or mark the threshold between open lawn and paved plaza. In terms of space activation, it introduces a new dimension—one that opens up vertical space to intuitively support the social rituals of contemporary outdoor life. Illumination & Power Kits integrate warm LED light and charging access directly into the rail, allowing the system to glow subtly after dark and support the devices that increasingly accompany us outside. Under-rail hooks and optional backstops acknowledge practically accommodate personal items on and underneath the rail.

Materiality balances warmth and endurance. Sustainably sourced wood options—including dassoXTR Fused Bamboo®, Kebony Dually Modified™ Wood and thermally modified ash—offer tactile richness and long-term stability, paired with powdercoated steel supports and an integrated footrest that lend comfort and structural clarity. The result is visually restrained yet materially robust, suited to campuses, hospitality settings and civic landscapes alike.

Link Rail embraces the role of modular site furnishings as an instrument rather than a singular object. It gives landscape architects a precise but flexible tool to define edges, guide movement and cultivate connection at standing height, achieving the tailored feel of custom work through the efficiency of a standardized system. In doing so, it reflects an evolving understanding of public space—less fixed, more social and always in motion.
