The Kunyu Mountain Nature Preserve 80th Anniversary Monument is a reflective space designed to immerse visitors in the history and transformation of the land. Located in the Kunyu Mountain National Nature Reserve, the monument honors the 80-year legacy of conservation efforts that have transformed the landscape and sustained the ecological balance of what was once barren land. Unlike traditional monuments, which often stand as distant symbols, this monument invites visitors to directly connect with the land’s history, offering a space where history, ecology, and human effort are woven into a continuous dialogue. The monument not only commemorates the past but also encourages reflection and engagement with the ongoing restoration process.

Set against the majestic backdrop of Kunyu Mountain, the monument’s circular form evokes the enduring rings of trees. Visitors walk through history, tracing a spiraling steel path that mirrors the journey of the forest preserve over time.

At the heart of the monument is a massive split boulder, which serves as both a symbol of the scars left by past deforestation and a testament to the ongoing healing process within the National Nature Preserve. Once a land ravaged by human destruction, Kunyu Mountain now stands as a powerful symbol of ecological restoration. The jagged edges of the boulder represent the irreversible damage done to the land, while its survival and transformation underscore the tireless efforts to revive the forest. The split boulder is more than an object to observe; it is a reflective space that prompts visitors to consider the tension between human harm and nature’s capacity for renewal.

The use of 3D scanning technology was crucial in accurately recording the boulder’s shape and integrating it into the design. This digital precision allowed the design to harmonize with the boulder’s natural form, resulting in a monument that feels as much a part of the landscape as the mountain itself. The split boulder, along with the surrounding elements—weathering steel, wooden benches, and spiraling steel rings—works together to draw visitors into the narrative of the preserve’s 80-year history and the ongoing process of ecological restoration.

The monument encourages visitors to sit on the benches, contemplate the vast landscape, and reflect on the preserve’s ecological transformation. It fosters a deeper connection with the land and a greater understanding of the restoration efforts over the years.

The Kunyu Mountain Nature Preserve 80th Anniversary Monument redefines the concept of a monument. It is not just a marker of history but a dynamic space that invites reflection, interaction, and dialogue. Through its thoughtful design and the improvisational spirit that shaped its construction, the monument makes a significant contribution to the broader conversation about ecological restoration and humanity’s role in preserving the natural world.
