Landscape Forms introduces the Typology Catenary Ring Light

Landscape Forms has introduced the Typology Catenary Ring Light, a new evolution of the collection’s signature circular luminaire. Designed in collaboration with Designworks, a BMW Group company, the catenary application lifts the ring into open space, creating an immediately recognizable presence suspended above the landscape.

The luminaire creates a continuous halo of ambient light with a sculptural, almost celestial presence. Viewed from below, the luminous ring frames the sky and encourages people to turn their gaze upward. Seen from a distance, its simple geometry gives it a strong identity, creating a memorable point of reference within plazas, pedestrian corridors, civic spaces and other public environments.

Suspending the ring from catenary cables also changes the way it engages with the landscape. Freed from a support directly beneath it, the luminaire appears to hover overhead while leaving the ground plane open and unobstructed. Used individually, it becomes a sculptural focal point. Repeated in sequence or arranged in larger compositions, the rings can create rhythm, guide movement and establish a distinctive visual language across a site.

“The collaboration between Landscape Forms and Designworks, a BMW Group company, brought together two organizations deeply committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in urban design,” says Ryan Heiser, Director of Design at Landscape Forms. “This evolution of the ring light represents our shared belief that functional infrastructure can—and should—inspire wonder. 

The 40-inch cast-aluminum ring uses a flexible linear LED light engine to deliver both direct and indirect illumination, creating a continuous, evenly distributed glow. It is offered in 2700K, 3000K, 3500K and 4000K color temperatures, with standard- and high-output options to suit different site conditions and lighting needs. Tapered steel catenary poles support both parallel-line and X-pattern configurations, giving designers flexibility in how the rings are composed overhead.

By day, the Catenary Ring Light reads as a refined piece of industrial design, its slender circular form bringing clarity and visual interest to the space above. By night, it transforms into something more atmospheric—a luminous presence that appears almost weightless, shaping the character of the landscape below.

As an extension of the broader Typology collection, the Catenary Ring Light gives landscape architects a new way to work with light not simply as illumination, but as an expressive element of place.
