Typology Catenary Ring Light | Landscape Forms

There’s something elemental about a circle of light suspended against the night sky. With the Typology Catenary Ring Light, Landscape Forms and Designworks, a BMW Group company, turn that simple geometry into a luminous object of striking, interest-piquing presence.

Suspended from catenary cables, the ring appears almost weightless above the landscape. Its continuous band of light creates a glowing halo that’s immediately recognizable from a distance, while from directly below, the open center frames the sky like a looking glass. The effect is at once architectural and atmospheric, giving the luminaire a character that shifts with viewpoint, time of day and surrounding context.

By day, the Catenary Ring Light is a crisp, sculptural object, defined by clean geometry and a refined material palette. By night, it becomes something more ethereal—a luminous circle seemingly suspended in space, casting an even ambient glow while adding a memorable visual marker to the landscape.

For landscape architects, the ring also opens up a different way of thinking about the space above the ground plane. Sculptural, suspended luminaires can occupy the center of plazas, pedestrian corridors and gathering spaces, helping define the volume of the landscape itself. A single ring can serve as a focal point, while a series can establish cadence, movement and continuity across a larger site.

The 40-inch cast-aluminum ring integrates a flexible LED light engine with direct and indirect illumination, producing a continuous, evenly distributed glow. Four color temperatures, from 2700K to 4000K, and standard- and high-output options allow the light character and performance to be tuned to the setting. The catenary system can be configured in parallel lines or X-patterns, offering flexibility in how multiple rings are arranged across open space.

The Catenary Ring Light can also be paired with Typology’s pole-mounted Ring Lights, allowing the same distinctive form to move through a project at different heights and in different relationships to the landscape.

More than a source of light, Typology Catenary Ring Light is an object to be experienced. Its simplicity gives it broad architectural compatibility, while its scale, luminosity and unmistakable form give it the power to make a place feel singular, recognizable and memorable.
