Following the completion of Parkville Station, the City of Melbourne has engaged contractors to construct Stage Two of the University Square master plan. University Square is located in the ‘City North’ precinct. University Square sits within a well-established, globally renowned, and growing area of mixed uses, including educational, health, research, commercial, and residential uses. It is part of a broader network of parks in the area, including Lincoln Square and Argyle Square. The Square is immediately surrounded by University of Melbourne landholdings.

The 2016 Masterplan included two stages: Stage 1 was completed in 2019, and Stage 2 was paused during the construction of the Parkville Station. The University Square Master Plan Refresh and updated concept design for Stage two seeks to accommodate an evolved site context with the new additions of the MPavilion on-site (licenced until 2032) and the Metro Tunnel Parkville Station entry opposite the Square.

Stage 2 construction will include:
- a fully renewed plaza
- more than 2500 square metres of public open space for recreational and social activities new garden beds and lawn, providing the lush neighbourhood greening the community has been asking for
- approximately 130 new trees creating an additional 41 per cent tree cover, helping to create a cooler environment in summer street furniture such as chairs, drinking fountains, picnic tables and bike hoops
- public art
- water management in Barry Street.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
