The redevelopment of Liverpool Street Station, Britain’s busiest train station, has been approved by the City of London Corporation. Set to unlock new growth opportunities in the heart of the Square Mile, these redevelopment plans are to create a modern, fully accessible station combined with new commercial, cultural, and public spaces. By improving central London’s connectivity to the rest of the country, they will also make the area a more pleasant place to visit, work, and travel.

The approved plans result from extensive consultation with accessibility advocates, heritage organizations, and local businesses. The original designs have been refined to better highlight the station’s notable entrances and historic architecture. The scheme also features new office spaces, a diverse range of shops and cafes, and enhanced pedestrian routes. The area will see extensive landscaping and greening to make it more pedestrian- and cycle-friendly. Additionally, energy-efficient designs and low-carbon construction methods are incorporated throughout.

A huge thank you to ACME, whose architectural vision has led the project with clarity and care, and to our client Network Rail for their ambition and trust throughout the process.
At SLA, we’ve worked to ensure that landscape and City Nature are not an afterthought, but one of the key drivers of London Liverpool Street’s transformation. The design introduces new accessible public spaces, stronger local biodiversity, improved pedestrian connections and what will become the largest landscaped green roof in the City of London. It also enhances the setting of the historic Kindertransport statue and strengthens the everyday experience of moving through the station.

The redeveloped station will provide step-free access to every platform, including the London Underground, and an expanded concourse will future-proof the station to service more than 200 million commuters and visitors in the decades ahead.
