The National Trust of Scotland (NTS) has announced it is moving to the next stage of developing plans for a visitor centre at Glenfinnan Monument. LDN Architects, in conjunction with Ironside Farrar landscape architects, have been engaged by NTS to create a concept design for visitor facilities. The concept plan will allow NTS to create an initial design that will progress to detailed design, statutory planning consultation, and the development of a funding package for the work.
The aim of the project is to create an environmentally sustainable visitor gateway that offers a better experience for visitors to Glenfinnan Monument while also helping to relieve pressure on the local community.
The Glenfinnan visitor centre welcomed 660,000 people in 2025, making it one of Scotland’s busiest tourist destinations outside Glasgow and Edinburgh. The existing visitor facilities, originally built in the 1960s, were designed for around 100,000 visitors per year, and therefore they now struggle to welcome such a high volume of people at peak times.
“We want to become a place that thrives rather than copes, and inspires rather than processes its visitors.”
Clea Warner, Regional Director, Highlands & Islands

The Glenfinnan community is also developing a potential off-site mobility hub to better handle visitor parking needs and promote active, sustainable transportation. These two projects will advance in tandem to ensure that visitor management improvements in the village are integrated and work well. Given its iconic Highland location, the new visitor centre’s design will draw inspiration from the landscape and blend seamlessly into it through thoughtful architecture and materials. Inverness-based LDN Architects, known for creating environmentally conscious, sustainable, and resilient buildings, will oversee the design, taking into account the often-challenging west coast climate.
The current timeline is to seek planning permission in autumn 2026 and commence work on site in 2027.
