Recently, the City, Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP), RIOS, the Denver Downtown Development Authority (DDDA), community leaders and neighborhood partners gathered to break ground on the first phase of construction of the Reimagine Skyline Park project in downtown Denver.

This major investment will reestablish Skyline Park as a dynamic, energetic core of the city and a key community gathering space that celebrates Denver’s history and promotes outdoor, urban recreation.

Denver Skyline Park is a historic civic park in the heart of Downtown Denver, being reimagined as a dynamic, inclusive urban destination that celebrates community, culture, and outdoor life.

Led by the Denver Parks & Recreation (DPR) in partnership with Downtown Denver Partnership
(DDP), the project restores Skyline Park as Denver’s “front yard,” enhancing accessibility, connectivity, and year-round activation while honoring its legacy as a cultural landmark.
“Skyline Park’s redesign is guided by two core ideas: fabric and flow. Fabric weaves together historic landmarks like the D+F Tower with new amenities such as the Park Café, creating a flexible and cohesive park experience. Flow reintroduces Lawrence Halprin’s concept of “urban choreography,” shaping a continuous sequence of welcoming spaces that are now fully accessible, with no stairs or barriers. Designed to support a wide range of activities year-round, the reimagined Skyline Park will serve as an adaptable community space that reflects Denver’s urban outdoor lifestyle.”
Nate Cormier, Managing Studio Director, RIOS
Originally designed in the 1970s by renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, Skyline Park is defined by sculptural forms inspired by Colorado’s canyon landscapes. Over time, incremental changes and a 2000s era update fragmented the park experience. The current improvements reunify the site, restoring clarity, accessibility, and purpose while responding to contemporary community needs.
Beyond revitalizing the park’s interior, the design amplifies activity along the streetscape and honors Denver’s civic architectural legacy. Two new structures—the Café and the Stage Building—anchor the park with a striking, textured concrete façade that draws from the city’s tradition of fluted masonry. Reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, the buildings’ vertical articulation creates soft, fabric-like forms that echo the sitewide concept of flowing fabric, visually unifying architecture and landscape.

In response to growing interest in transforming Skyline Park, RIOS and Denver Parks led an extensive community outreach process beginning in 2021. Through online and in-person engagement, residents expressed a clear desire for more green space, vibrant cultural activities, and a stronger sense of social connection downtown. Block 2 is a direct response to these aspirations, prioritizing openness, flexibility, and inclusive programming to create a park that welcomes everyone, every season of the year.
The investment also aligns with Denver Parks and Recreation’s commitment to ensuring equitable parkaccess in every neighborhood. This first phase of improvements is a critical component of the $30 million Reimagine Skyline Park initiative that will make Skyline Park a destination public space in the heart of downtown.
Planning and design for the Reimagined Skyline Park project began in 2020 and were informed by extensive community engagement. The final design incorporates features that will activate the park year-round and throughout park hours, creating a vibrant, flexible gathering space.
