A Coastal Retreat at The Standard Pattaya, Na Jomtien

Reinterpreting Pattaya’s Seaside Landscape

The Standard, Pattaya Na Jomtien, located along a linear beachfront site in Na Jomtien, Pattaya—approximately two hours from Bangkok, offers a coastal retreat positioned just beyond the intensity of the city’s vibrant core. The resort draws on Pattaya’s historic seaside identity, balancing proximity and escape in a distinctly relaxed coastal setting while embracing The Standard’s ethos of social connection and shared experience.

Palm-lined corridors at the entrance recall the historic character of Pattaya’s Dongtan Beach, creating a shaded courtyard that welcomes guests into the resort.

Choreographing Arrival Through Courtyard Sequences

Responding to the site’s long and linear configuration, the landscape choreographs a gradual transition from the active urban edge into a composed internal realm. A sequence of courtyards guides arrival, slowing movement and easing guests into a relaxed atmosphere. Framed by iconic palms that define Na Jomtien’s skyline, the landscape preserves the seaside character while using these elements as climatic devices, providing shade, ventilation, and spatial rhythm. Layered shading, framed views, and textured ground planes shape arrival and drop-off spaces, leading into a vibrant central courtyard where planting and materiality balance playful vibrancy with refined 1960s references. Layered social spaces, rather than singular sea views, shape the experience, extending the resort’s appeal through a balance of energy, leisure, and inclusivity.

Planting and Material Expression

At the centre of the resort, two interconnected courtyards anchored by preserved mature trees. Buildings line the perimeter, releasing a central landscape that enhances pedestrian flow while maintaining clear visual corridors toward the beachfront. Planting reinforces this framework through a curated palette of tropical species and seasonal color. Existing Casuarina trees are retained, while sculptural palms and canopy trees create dynamic shadow patterns. Salt-tolerant species ensure resilience to coastal conditions, enriching both the sensory and climatic experience.

Terracotta tiles crafted from recycled ceramic and glass introduce warmth and texture to the central pool.

Material strategies further strengthen the design narrative. Recycled circular terracotta tiles, produced from ceramic and glass waste, introduce warmth and tactile richness while reflecting the project’s contemporary environmental values.

Contemporary Coastal Identity

Together, landscape structure, planting strategy, and material articulation create a hospitality environment that balances vibrant social energy with the timeless elegance of mid-century modern design. The landscape acts as a platform for interaction, supporting both collective experiences and moments of retreat.
