ILASA announces 2013 Awards of Excellence

The Institute for Landscape Architecture in South Africa awarded their annual awards with 11 projects winning an Award of Excellence. Also awarded were the Presidential Award, a best use of trees sponsor award, and the Icon of Landscape Architecture, which was awarded to Johan van Papendorp who was best described by Penny Moir: “Johan is not only one of the founding members of OvP Associates, but one of the founding landscape architects for the profession in South Africa.”

Stockholm is a city on the water. The city´s setting is where two archipelagoes meet, Lake Malaren with its fresh water on one side and the Baltic Sea with its salt water on the other, interspersed by a mosaic of hilly, convex islands. This is the essential quality of the Swedish capital.

New York AIDS Memorial Update


The AIDS Memorial design has recently been updated with the loss of the ivy and flowering plants. studio A+I is still the design firm in charge of developing the design for the memorial, with the design progressing with retention of the overall form and linear benches but has lost the natural aesthetic of the mid-2012 design, it appears to be more harsh, static and less inviting. The water feature remains as the focal point under the structure.

Théâtre de Signes | Versailles Palace Gardens | TOPOTEK1

Like a baroque garden that makes a connection between heaven and earth with mirror-like pools and broderie parterres, so Topotek 1’s design for the ‘théâtre de signes’ makes a connection from the physical to the virtual world, with the structure of new broderie bosquets. The shape of the garden as viewed from the air is part of a coded language, providing new characters for a contemporary reading.

Leicester Square City Quarter | London UK | Burns + Nice

In June 2007 BURNS + NICE won a design competition for the re-design of Leicester Square, organised by Westminster City Council. The square is the home of British cinema staging over 50 film premières every year as well as a number other large scale events throughout the year. It attracts approximately two million visitors each week. Together with its side streets the square accommodates 250 servicing deliveries every morning, over 35 al fresco dining pitches, the largest cinemas and casinos in the UK and five hotels, with another two large ones planned. In combination these activities make the Leicester Square City Quarter a challenging and multi-layered urban environment.
