Yangzhou Slender West Lake Hot Spring Resort Renovation | Wscape Landscape Design

Set within the embrace of Yangzhou’s iconic Slender West Lake, this 13-hectare resort renovation reimagines the relationship between classical Chinese garden tradition and contemporary leisure culture. The transformation turns a previously fragmented, inward-facing site into a cohesive, open wellness retreat—where the poetic principles of Jiangnan landscapes merge with modern hospitality.

A Central Lake as the Spatial and Cultural Anchor
At the heart of the renovation is a decisive shift from meandering water channels and scattered pools to a singular, expansive central lake. This bold move re-establishes water not only as a visual and symbolic element, but as the primary organizer of experience. The new lake connects key programs—the arrival pavilion, spa, villas, and public zones—into a unified composition, inviting guests into a calm, immersive environment that evokes the cultural memory of “water as soul” in traditional Chinese gardens.

A Landscape Embraced by Water, Shaped by Topography
Surrounded by the water system of Slender West Lake, the hotel’s redesigned spatial structure carefully utilizes subtle terrain differences. The hot spring pools are sunken into the site, allowing expansive views of the lake and creating a serene, horizon-wide experience for bathers. At the same time, guestroom clusters are slightly elevated, using topography to shield private areas from view. This spatial strategy enhances the visual connection to the landscape while preserving a strong sense of privacy, achieving a delicate balance between openness and retreat.

A Contemporary Ritual of Bathing
Inspired by the local saying “Morning: skin wraps water; afternoon: water wraps skin,” the design reinterprets Yangzhou’s rich bathing tradition. A variety of pool types—panoramic tubs, courtyard clusters, temperature-contrast baths—invite different rhythms of use, from quiet introspection to communal relaxation. Ancient rituals are not merely referenced; they are reshaped into contemporary spatial experiences.

Garden Courtyards and Whispering Walls
Villas and guestrooms are conceived as modern courtyard dwellings, referencing Jiangnan architecture through whitewashed walls, grey roof tiles, latticed screens, and local plant palettes. Outdoor spaces are deliberately understated, offering privacy and a sense of seasonality. Light, shadow, and natural texture animate the architecture—creating a daily choreography of stillness, movement, and reflection.

Infinity Pool at the Water’s Edge
A once-enclosed swimming pool has been reoriented to face the lake, now reading as an infinity-edge mirror that blends seamlessly with the horizon. Nearby, tree-shaded decks and children’s splash zones form a vibrant social hub, balancing quiet retreat with family-friendly programming.

Light Footprint, Deep Respect
The design preserves all mature trees on site while selectively reducing understory vegetation to enhance views and spatial clarity. Rain gardens, native plants, and permeable paths support local biodiversity and sustainable water management. Parking areas are softened with canopy trees, reducing heat island effects and reinforcing the site’s ecological identity.

Inclusive and Responsible Design
All circulation routes were restructured to be barrier-free, ensuring ease of movement for older guests and families. Natural ventilation and tree shading minimize energy demand. Every intervention follows a low-impact principle—respecting landform, minimizing disruption, and allowing the landscape to regenerate naturally.

Toward a New Hospitality Landscape
This renovation redefines the typology of the resort landscape by harmonizing classical garden aesthetics with the needs of contemporary wellness travel. In a city where poetry lives not only in text but in daily rituals, the renewed Slender West Lake Resort offers more than luxury—it offers rhythm, memory, and a deep sense of place.
