Brisbane is hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and sees it as a chance to create an iconic Brisbane destination that people will enjoy, use and value long after the event. The Queensland state government recently released the Victoria Park Precinct Draft Legacy Plan, which outlines how the Precinct can become a more accessible, better-connected community hub for Brisbane. With open space, easier ways to get around, and new places to gather, play and experience the city.
Key Features of the Legacy Plan
Venues and Infrastructure
Brisbane Stadium: A new 63,000-seat stadium will host major sporting and entertainment events and become home to teams such as the Brisbane Lions and the Queensland Bulls.
National Aquatic Centre: A state-of-the-art aquatic hub that integrates the heritage-listed Centenary Pool will serve both elite athletes and the community.
Brisbane Showgrounds: Upgrades will enhance event facilities and transform the Athletes Village into permanent housing after the Games.
Green and Inclusive Spaces
Wetlands: An expanded York’s Hollow wetland will revitalise and enhance the landscape, recognising the area’s natural character and evolving history.
Urban Forest: Around two-thirds of Victoria Park will remain designated green and public space for people and urban wildlife.
Ridgelines: A park loop along the ridgelines and bridges will stitch the precinct together and provide universal accessibility across Victoria Park and surrounding destinations.
Community Gateways: Wider pathways with shade and lighting will provide comfortable, safe and convenient routes to and through the precinct, including on Gregory Terrace, Bowen Bridge Road and Herston Road.
Venue Commons: The place where the champions of 2032 warmed-up will endure as a community sporting legacy of the Games, inspiring future generations to strive for gold!
Movement and Accessibility
Integrated rail, bus, walking, and cycling networks will make it easy for people of all abilities to access and enjoy the precinct. Active travel corridors and upgraded public transport links will reduce reliance on private vehicles.
Flexible, Year-Round Activation
The precinct is designed for everyday use as well as major events, with flexible spaces for sport, culture, markets, and community gatherings.
