The conceptual masterplan for one of Laos’ largest tourism developments has been unveiled, presenting a vision for a new generation of destination planning that places landscape, culture and long-term sustainability at the heart of tourism growth.
Vang Vieng has long been recognised as one of Southeast Asia’s most popular backpacker destinations, but is increasingly evolving into a hub for nature-based tourism and higher-value visitor experiences. Spanning 522 hectares across the villages of Pakpor and Phoudindeng in Vang Vieng District, Vientiane Province, the masterplan establishes a long-term framework for an integrated tourism destination rooted in the site’s landscape and cultural identity. It reflects a broader shift across Asia towards destinations that balance economic growth with environmental stewardship while responding to growing demand for more authentic and culturally immersive travel experiences.

Developed by Vang Villy Hill Co., Ltd., the project will bring together hospitality, recreation, cultural attractions and supporting infrastructure within a single destination. Rather than planning these as standalone elements, the masterplan establishes how the destination should grow and evolve while responding to its landscape and cultural setting.

Gensler’s scope included the conceptual masterplanning of the development, establishing the overall vision, placemaking strategy, spatial framework and development principles that will guide the project’s future evolution. Delivered through a collaborative effort across Gensler’s Asia Pacific and Middle East studios, the project brings together diverse expertise to shape a destination where hospitality, culture, and sustainability are conceived as a single interconnected experience.

Inspired by the landscapes and cultural traditions of Laos, the masterplan responds to the site’s existing landforms, agricultural character and ecological systems rather than imposing a conventional resort model. Circularity is embedded throughout the planning approach, which prioritises nature-led development, low-impact mobility, the protection of natural water systems and landscapes, and long-term resilience as the destination evolves over time.

“Across Asia, we are seeing a major shift in how destinations are being imagined and experienced. Travellers today are seeking deeper connections to nature, culture and wellbeing, while destinations are increasingly expected to deliver long-term environmental and social value alongside economic growth. For Vang Vieng, the opportunity wasn’t to replicate tourism models from elsewhere, but to reveal and strengthen the qualities that already make this place extraordinary.”
Steven Velegrinis, Gensler’s Design Director and Regional Leader for Cities & Urban Design.

The masterplan expands Gensler’s growing portfolio of large-scale tourism and destination developments across Southeast Asia, including its involvement in Vingroup’s Blue Waves Theatre at Vinhomes Green Paradise in Vietnam. Together, the projects reflect a broader shift towards more experience-driven, culturally rooted and environmentally responsive destinations across the region.
