The Berlin government initiated a public consultation process in July to discuss the future of Tempelhofer Feld, which was the former Tempelhof airport and became a park in 2010. In addition to this, there will be dialogue workshops (Dialogwerkstaff) attended by pre-selected participants. Around 20,000 people from Berlin were contacted, and 1,000 expressed interest, out of which 275 were chosen to participate. These 275 individuals will take part in workshops to formulate recommendations, which will then be considered in an upcoming international ideas competition (Ideenwettbewerb) scheduled to start in November 2024. The Tempelhofer Feld international design competition will consist of two stages in February and June 2025, and a jury will be announced at a later date.
An international design competition for the former Tempelhof airport was held in 2010 with several firms making the shortlist including BASE, Paris; bbzl böhm benfer zahiri landschaften städtebau, Berlin; Capatti Staubach, Berlin; GROSS.MAX, Edinburgh; Rehwaldt Architekten Landschaft, Dresden; Topotek 1, Berlin;. GROSS.MAX with Sutherland Hussey won the competition for Tempelhofer Feld, which covers 355 hectares of the site of the former Tempelhof Airport.
Tempelhofer Feld opened to the public in early 2010 and faced pressure to be privatized and developed. However, a citizen’s action group announced a petition in 2012, and a referendum was held in 2014 to save the park. The Berlin government is currently seeking public input on recommendations. However, in 2024, like many cities worldwide, they will face pressure to develop new housing. This is due to the increased cost of housing and living, while also needing to maintain green areas to address climate change and declining biodiversity.
