The World Landscape Architecture Awards are currently calling for entries in four categories including Built, Conceptual, Research & Communication and Student. WLA has the honour of having five experienced and knowledgable juror who have experience around the world in landscape architecture. Please meet the jurors below to find out more about their knowledge and experience.
Martin Barry – Founder & Chairman, reSITE; Co-Founder & CEO, City Crew
Martin is a landscape architect, the Founder and Chairman of reSITE, an international nonprofit organization exchanging ideas for more lovable and livable cities. He is also the co-founder and CEO of City Crew, a creative and design consultancy for cities and real estate investors. As a former Associate at W Architecture in New York City, Martin led multi-disciplinary teams on complex landscape projects all over the globe, collaborating on urban waterfronts, parks, plazas and universities in the United States, Saudi Arabia, China, United Arab Emirates, Haiti, Canada, Europe and Mexico. His latest large landscape projects in Canada have received numerous design awards in North America. With degrees in history, business, and landscape architecture, and several years training in various construction trades he is uniquely positioned to understand and manage the disparate forces on complex urban projects. Because of this diverse background, he is adept at negotiating the distinct and often competing perspectives between municipalities, architects, investors, cultural actors and communities. He see landscape architecture as a fundamental tool in urbanism to revitalize cities, making them more livable, resilient and competitive.
Martin is a Fulbright Scholar and a Fellow with the Design Trust for Public Space. He is a Registered Landscape Architect in the United States who lectures about landscape architecture, urban design and collaboration at conferences and universities in the United States, Europe and Asia, who has published widely on the subjects. He is currently lecturing at Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, and resides in Prague, Czech Republic.
Kimberly Garza – Founder, ATLAS Lab
Kimberly Garza is Founder and Director of ATLAS Lab, an urban design studio focused on enlivening and promoting healthy communities through landscape architecture and art. With 10 years of professional experience working with public and private institutions, Kimberly has designed and managed every kind of project throughout the country, including: private homes, streetscapes, master plans, plazas, schools, public parks and public art projects. Kimberly’s work is internationally recognized, including juried selection for the Market Street Prototyping Festival, Grand-Metis International Garden Festival and winning proposal for the Sacramento Capitol Mall design competition. NextCity.org named her 40 under 40 urban innovator for the 2015 Vanguard Conference. As a Lecturer at the University of California, Davis, Kimberly’s current teaching and research examines the role of small scale, rapid prototyping can play on transforming overlooked and underutilized areas within the built environment. She holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts in landscape architecture from University of California, Berkeley.
Andrew Grant, Founder & Director, Grant Associates. RDI, CMLI, Hon FRIBA, FRSA.
Andrew is a Landscape Architect whose work explores the connection between people and nature and he formed Grant Associates in 1997 to test the creative possibilities of sustainable landscape architecture and ecological placemaking. In 2012 he was awarded the title of Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) in recognition of his pioneering global work in landscape architecture. He is a Visiting Professor for the Department of Landscape, Sheffield University, and an Honorary Fellow of the RIBA reflecting his work on key architectural projects such as the 2008 Stirling Prize winning Accordia. Andrew led the multi-disciplinary design team on the £500 million Gardens by the Bay project at Bay South in Singapore. This 54 hectare public park has won multiple international design awards including the Building Project of the year at the 2012 World Architecture Festival. He is a co-founder of the Forest of Imagination project in Bath.
Jason Ho, Initiator of Mapping Workshop, China and a Founding Director of Urban Informality Lab
Jason Ho is the initiator of Mapping Workshop, China and a Founding Director of Urban Informality Lab, Melbourne. Jason has taught and practiced at a large number of universities and design firms in both Australia and China. Jason serves on Expert Advisory Committees of several international organizations including Asia Architecture and Urbanism Alliance and China’s Landscape Design Industry Associations. He also serves as an international judge for China’s Idea-King Landscape Design Awards and Asian Design Awards. Jason is currently the international editor of Landscape Architecture China.
Jason received a PhD from RMIT University, in which his creative design research is focused on the mapping of boundary walls in China. After his PhD completion in 2014, Jason initiated a movement called “Mapping for Humanity” in China. Since then, he has delivered more than 90 speeches and led 25 mapping workshops at different architectural schools across the nation to help students to rebuild empathy with the underprivileged communities.
Jason also holds a Masters in Landscape Architecture from RMIT University, where he explored the concept of “Landscape Urbanism” through the understanding of supermarket organization. His work “Where is Milk?” was exhibited at the 2008 Shanghai Biennale.
Mark Johnson FASLA, Principal, Civitas
Mark Johnson co-founded Civitas since has led the design of nearly $1 billion in built works. He is a recognized thought leader in the regeneration of inner city, brownfield and industrial areas. Foremost among these is his leadership of planning and design for regeneration of Denver’s Stapleton International Airport.
Mark has achieved national recognition for the design of complex urban redevelopment projects. Each of these involves green infrastructure as a catalyst to economic, environmental and social change. He led the urban design for the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan and has been the lead strategist for regeneration of St. Louis’ Northside/Pruitt Igoe neighborhood since 2006. He is currently working with the New York Restoration Project and the Columbia University School of Public Health Research on an evidence-based plan for greening the South Bronx.
Mark is also a prominent designer of public space. He recently completed the North Embarcadero, the centerpiece of downtown San Diego’s waterfront; St. Patrick’s Island in Calgary; Plaza One in Greenville, SC; and has ongoing public space projects in Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, St Louis, Raleigh, Tampa, and Washington DC.
Mark has won many awards for design, planning and service in his history of pushing the envelope of practice for landscape architects. He is a frequent lecturer at universities; a regular speaker for ULI Forums; faculty at the International Academy of Design and Health, Stockholm; regular advisor to the Prague Institute for Planning; and visiting critic at the Harvard GSD.
The Jurors and the Employees of World Landscape Architecture cannot enter any projects in the WLA Awards and also have to abide by the Jury Rules including those relating to conflict of interest and conduct.
