2022 WLA Student Awards

World Landscape Architecture calls for submissions for the 2022 WLA Awards, the annual international landscape architecture awards that seek to honour landscape architects for their outstanding work and promote the profession across the world. The Awards provides landscape architects and designers from all countries to be recognised on the world stage by their profession.

Past Student Awards have been awarded to students from the University of Toronto, Harvard GSD, Beijing Forestry University, Wuhan Polytechnic University, University of Moratuwa and many more.

All landscape architects, landscape design, urban design who are currently studying or who have (or will) graduated in the past two years (2020-2022) are eligible to enter the Student Awards. The majority of the submission must be landscape architecture in focus. The submitted work needs to have been completed whilst attending studies.

Students can enter as an individual or group (only one registration is required per submission). If an individual is submitting group work, they need to provide credits for all team members.

A submission can only be submitted in one category. (i.e each submission can only be entered once).

Submissions must be a concept or built during 2018-2022.

Projects that have previously won a WLA Award cannot be submitted.


Student Awards include the following categories:

  • Student – Design
  • Student – Analysis and Planning
  • Student – Research
  • Graduate Award

Registration Entry Fees – CLOSED

Student Award Categories $50AUD (approx. 40USD, 32EUR, 250CNY) per entry

Entry Registration Fees can be paid in the WLA Shop via Alipay, Paypal or Credit Card.

Student Award categories – Award of Excellence (1 per category) – WLA Award Trophy, WLA Award Certificate, Featured on WLA in 2022. $250AUD Reward (paid by Paypal)

Student Award – Merit Award (2 per category) – WLA Award Certificate, published on WLA in 2022.

Student Award – Honourable Mention (up to 2 per category) – WLA Award Certificate, published on WLA in 2022.

Shortlists for Student Awards
All shortlisted entries will receive a certificate which will be provided after the winners are announced.

The selection of the Awards is up to the jury’s discretion. They may decide not to award all awards. (e.g. Award of Excellence, Merit Award, Honorable Mentions) due to quality or other issues.

All entrants are eligible to be published on the WLA website during 2022. The Editor has discretion on publication of submissions

Awards Submission

The Awards submission requirements include the following:

  • A maximum five (5) pages (A3 / 11×17 format – landscape orientation) using the WLA Awards template will only be accepted (which is supplied as a download link via email after purchasing an registration entry)
  • One (1) page of text (maximum 500 words – no images) and four (4) pages of images with a caption per image (25 words maximum). Submissions must be in English.
  • The entry number (this is the order number provided via email) and project name shall be shown in the locations as per the template.
  • No company or designers or students names or recognisable graphics/logos within the text or images.
  • Awards submission shall be less than 10Mb in pdf format. The pdf file only needs to be screen resolution (96 dpi) for juries to review. The submission pdf file should be an attachment to the email. We do not accept links from various services such as dropbox, qq.com or similar.

Submission Email

The Awards submission should be submitted via email to [email protected] by the deadline. The entry file name should have the entry number, entry name and category. E.g. 70125-Garden Rooms-Built-Residential.pdf. The submission email should include a declaration that the person or company submitting the project owns the rights or has permission to submit the project and agrees to protect World Landscape Architecture from any claims for breach of copyright.  E.g. XXXX Company declares that we own the rights or has permission to submit this project and agrees to protect World Landscape Architecture from any claims from the project or image owner.

Student Entrants should provide the submission details including Entry Number, Project Name, Student/s Names, School, Advisors(optional) in the submission email. The emails should include a copy of their student ID to verify their student enrollment

Judging Criteria

Student – Design
may include masterplans, parks, streets, plazas, installation, gardens and other forms of landscape design. The submission should be focused on the concept, ideas and process. The submission should focus on the design concept and ideas (not the analysis or detailed information).


  • Design (Design Ideas and Resolution/Realisation)
  • Innovation (The level of innovation in the project)
  • Implementation (Final Constructed project)

Student – Analysis and Planning

Includes unbuilt (or not implemented) Analysis and Planning projects that were developed for coursework or competitions and may include masterplans, frameworks, urban design plans, conservation plans, research analysis, town planning, transport planning, development guidelines, etc. The submission should focus on the analytical and planning (not the design) undertaken during the project.


  • Analysis and Contribution (analysis, value to community, context, possible implementation)
  • Innovation (The level of innovation)
  • Presentation & Supporting Information (how the work was presented and explained)

Student – Research
Submissions can include investigations, studies, reviews related to the study of landscape architecture such as technology, law, education, policy, design technique or methodology, meta reviews, practice, business, representation, prototyping, etc. Submissions should include a hypothesis and/or conclusion. Design Projects should only be submitted in this category if they include considerable research as part of the project.


  • Concept/Idea (analysis, value to the profession and or community, context, possible implementation or further study)
  • Innovation (The level of innovation in the research)
  • Presentation & Supporting Information (how the work was presented and explained)

Graduate Award

Submissions must be a recently graduated student in the past 2 years who is seen as a future leader and contributing to the profession either as a professional, volunteer, academic, or educator.


  • Student work and activities during and after graduating
  • Innovation (The level of innovation in the student work)
  • Presentation & Supporting Information (how the work was presented and explained)

Frequently Asked Questions

I can’t find my order/entry number?
The order number you receive after purchasing a registration entry is your entry number and can be found in the first email you receive. If you do not receive your order email with 24-48 hours after purchasing, please contact [email protected]

A purchase with multiple entries will receive separate emails with additional order/entry numbers within 24-48 hours.

Can I put images on the first page?
No, the first page is for text only. No images, graphics, logos or other representation should be placed on the
first page

Can I change the border, font, layout, etc of the Template?
No changes should be made to the template to maintain equality between the entries. The font, border, entry number location and size, and layout should be as supplied in the template.

Can I put text on the images?
Text can only be put on images to provide labels or critical information such as labels on a plan or diagram or an image caption(25 words or less) . No long text such as paragraphs, etc. should be placed on images.

Can I put more than one image per image page?
Yes, you can please as many images on one page (excluding the first page) as you wish.
