Shams Abu Dhabi is a landmark development within Abu Dhabi and one of the first green developments in the region. Shams is intended to help meet an increasing demand for residential housing and commercial office buildings in Abu Dhabi, which has witnessed an expanded economic growth.
Sorouh Investments, a publicly traded international real estate development firm in Abu Dhabi, UAE, selected CRJA-IBI Group to revise the Master Plan and design the Central Park which will serve as a focal point of its Shams Abu Dhabi project, a major mixed-use development located on Al Reem Island off the northern shore of the capital city. CRJA-IBI Group successfully competed against three international design teams to win the park competition.

NBBJ’s landscape architects were involved from the project’s inception addressing site planning, landscape design and integration with architecture and interior design. In the midst of the design process, Tom and Iris Vail, life-long residents of Cleveland and long-standing friends of the Clinic expressed interest in providing funding for the development of a very special garden at the Cleveland Clinic’s new Heart Center. The Vails are recognized leaders in Cleveland’s civic affairs and share a keen interest in architecture and garden design and have been instrumental in the development of other landmark garden spaces on the Clinic’s campus over the last 25 years.

Hapa Collaborative worked with the City of Langley to revitalize McBurney Lane in the heart of the town’s historic downtown. Guided by the City’s downtown improvement plan, McBurney Lane was chosen as the initial project to invigorate a tired and underutilized space, to strengthen pedestrian connections between Fraser Highway – Langley’s main street – and Douglas Park, its largest public green space, and provide programmable spaces for events and activities in the Lane.

Arcadia, at the foot of Camelback Mountain, has long been a desirable neighborhood for its views, its central location, and the pastoral quality of its large green lots interspersed with citrus groves. The neighborhood has undergone many negative changes in the last decade due to the loss of historic homes and green spaces; hence, its community character has suffered. This one-acre site features a home and landscape renovation that ventured to honor the historic essence of Arcadia that has made the neighborhood so unique and livable for several decades. The landscape architect, in collaboration with the client, developed the project’s concept, design and details for both the hardscape and landscape.

UN-Habitat is launching a competition to promote collaboration between Kenya’s students and their peers elsewhere and to promote the importance of urban design. The competition is being organized in collaboration with Kenya’s Urban Development Department (UDD) and the Ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development. It is part of UN-Habitat’s support to the Kenya Municipal Program under the broad framework of ‘Support to a Sustainable Urban Development Sector in Kenya’, which is funded by SIDA.

WINNER | Hanger Barn by Folio (Youngsu Lee and Bosuk Hur)
The jury has selected the winning design in the sixth annual City of Dreams Pavilion Competition: Hanger Barn by Folio (Youngsu Lee and Bosuk Hur). Pending approvals and fundraising, this temporary art structure will be assembled on Governors Island and open to the public for the summer 2016 season.
