The Dommel forms the green-blue ecological link at the municipal level between Eindhoven’s landscape corridors Genneper Parks and De Karpen. To strengthen the role and position of the Dommel as the Stadsdommel, more space is needed. In the city centre, that space is limited: buildings are closely aligned to the stream and profiles are narrow. Nevertheless, the Dommel deserves greater significance as a structuring element in the urban fabric.
This space does not need to be purely physical. Viewing the Dommel as part of a broader river valley system reveals development opportunities for the urban Dommel zone within the urban system. This zone includes not only the stream and its banks but also connections, places to stay, and adjacent areas.
The Dommel zone consists of three layers. The first layer is the water and its banks, which are ecologically valuable and form a continuous green artery with growth potential. The second layer consists of cross-connections: streets, paths, and other spaces that touch or intersect the Dommel. Unbuilt areas behind the first building line are also included and integrated into the development principles. The third layer consists of places along the Dommel itself, existing or potential green and recreational spaces. These together help define the character of the zone.
The Stadsdommel seeks a balance between ecology and the need for high-quality public space in a densifying city centre. It forms a green structure within the city, offering space for rest, nature, movement, and social interaction. Animals find habitat here, while people find places to stay, walk, or play. The area develops a recognisable identity as an urban structure in which nature and city reinforce each other.
The surrounding buildings also play an important role. Inner courtyards, gardens, and especially roofs are integrated into the Dommel zone. Green roofs contribute to biodiversity and play a key role in climate adaptation. They retain rainwater, release it gradually into the Dommel, and can function as a second ground level for human use.
In this way, the Stadsdommel becomes an integrated system in which water, ecology, climate adaptation, and urban quality converge. Not just as a stream, but as a recognisable and versatile structure that shapes and connects the city.
