Montauk Sofa | A showroom with a garden entry

Montauk Sofa, turned to Cohlmeyer Architecture for their showroom in Montreal, Canada. As part of the design for the old factory, it was envisioned that the entry should be a garden to differentiate itself from the surrounding neighbourhood.

The integration of lush entry gardens that redefine the relationship between architecture and nature. They turned to Myke Hodgins of HETA to capitalise on the potential of an expansive exterior courtyard entry to bring the vision to life.

The incorporation of landscaping into this project followed on from previous Montauk showrooms such as Chicago showroom’s sinuous pathway winds through a lush garden, leading visitors into an oasis that softens the hard lines of the cityscape.

This entry garden is much more than a decorative element; it is a sanctuary. A carefully designed garden serves as a focal point, reinforcing tranquility ins a bustling urban setting. Visitors enter the showroom through this immersive landscape, transitioning seamlessly from the energy of the city into a serene and curated design environment. Full-height glass walls provide continuous views of the courtyard from each showroom floor, reinforcing the interplay between nature and interior space.

A Legacy of Landscape Integration

The Montauk projects demonstrate how thoughtful landscaping can elevate architectural design, turning industrial remnants into sophisticated urban retreats. By prioritizing green spaces in the entry sequence, Cohlmeyer Architecture and Montauk Sofa have redefined the experience of retail environments, blending functionality, sustainability, and artistry.

“The entry gardens are not just about aesthetics,” notes Daniel Cohlmeyer, Senior Partner at Cohlmeyer Architecture. “They fundamentally alter the way people interact with the buildings. They create an emotional moment—an invitation to slow down and engage with the space in a way that is both unexpected and deeply rewarding.”
