We are very happy at WLA to have a great jury for our inaugural student ideas competition – Reimagining the Spaces in Between. They will be assessing the submissions over two rounds include one shortlist round and finalist round to award the winners.

Angus Bruce – Head of Landscape Architecture, HASSELL, London, UK
Angus heads HASSELL’s global landscape architecture team from his base in their London studio.

He has more than 30 years of experience on award-winning projects across Asia, Australia and Europe, including most recently the international awards winning 20ha transformation of Sydney’s Darling Harbour precinct.

Over the course of his career, Angus has developed an innate understanding of how to bring innovative landscapes to life.

His particular focus is on unleashing the power of landscape design to meet business, environmental and social needs – and create natural, sustainable places people love.

Angus is known as one of the most energetic, enthusiastic forces in our business. He leads with heart and a real generosity that inspires everyone collaborating with him across disciplines, sectors and markets.

Anne Clark – Studio – MLA, Los Angeles, USA
Anne Clark is a registered landscape architect and architectural designer with a strong interest in the intersection of nature and infrastructure in the public realm. Her background in politics and community organizing informs her commitment to work in the public interest, particularly with regional destination spaces. Anne graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Design with degrees in Architecture and Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning.


Conor O’Shea – Assistant Professor, Department of Landscape Architecture, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA

Conor O’Shea, RLA, ASLA, is a landscape architect and Assistant Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign whose teaching, design, and research explore warehousing and logistics development at the urban / cropland interface, the effects of e-commerce on the built environment, the adaptive reuse of outmoded infrastructure, and designing for urban wildlife.

These topics form the basis for his work at his Chicago-based landscape architecture practice, Hinterlands Urbanism and Landscape, and his design research lab, the Landscape Strategies Laboratory, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Hinterlands has been featured in Architectural Record, Atlantic CityLab, Landscape Architecture Magazine, MAS Context Journal, WIRED, The Chicago Tribune, and Topos: The International Review of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design and its work has been exhibited at the Chicago Architecture Biennial, the Chicago Architecture Foundation, and the Venice Biennale.

The Landscape Strategies Laboratory is currently working on The Peterson Avenue Transect Study, a funded design research project that imagines new opportunities for urban wildlife in Chicago.

Conor holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Master in Landscape Architecture and Master in Design Studies degrees from Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

Elizabeth J Kennedy – Principal at EKLA, New York, USA
Elizabeth J. Kennedy, ASLA is nationally recognized for her expertise in preserving cultural landscapes through creative sustainable design. A Design Trust for Public Space research fellow, Van Alen Institute competition- and ASLA 2018 Student Awards juror, this graduate of Cornell University and very proud Wolmerian is a working principal who leads Elizabeth Kennedy Landscape Architect, PLLC—a collaborative inter-discipline practice founded in 1994 and noted for excellence in innovative landscape preservation, development and management. Elizabeth is active in the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), NOMA, and the AIA through its Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team (R/UDAT), and she is often invited as a featured speaker to address issues in social justice, urban design and community redevelopment.


Jason Ho – Founder of Mapping Workshop, China
Jason is a curator, urbanist and educator. He is the founder of Mapping Workshop, and the director of FEI Arts Museum Guangzhou. He has taught and researched at a large number of universities across the globe, including RMIT University, The University of Hong Kong, Peking University, The University of Pennsylvania, etc.

Jason is the founding member of South China Association of Landscape Architecture. He serves on juries of China’s national design competitions including Landscape Design Awards, LA Frontiers Award, and National Environmental Design Awards. He also serves on expert advisory committees of several international organizations including LWCircus, Asia Architecture and Urbanism Alliance and International Landscape Design Industry Associations.

Jason has participated in many international exhibitions including Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, Venice Biennale, Shanghai Biennale, Shenzhen Design Week and Shenzhen & Hong Kong Architecture \Urbanism Bio-City Biennale. He is the sub-curator of 2017 Shenzhen & Hong Kong Architecture \Urbanism Bio-City Biennale, and the academic convener of 2017 Guangzhou Art Week.

Jason is currently the adjunct professor at the School of Architecture and Urban Design at RMIT University, Melbourne, and also holding a position at the School of Architecture at South China University of Technology, Guangzhou.

Sophie Thompson – Director, LDA Design, London, UK
Sophie is a Landscape Architect and Director at LDA Design with over twenty years’ experience in the design and delivery of some of the UKs most exciting street, waterfront, and park projects. Sophie has lived and worked in San Francisco, Miami Beach, Sydney and London. Adopting a people-first approach, she is currently leading the design for The West End Project, one of the most ambitious transformations of public realm in central London. This scheme removes general traffic and sections of highway, to create cycle lanes, healthy streets and seven multi-functional urban spaces. Sophie is also responsible for the design of 4km of new seafront in Portsmouth and provides peer review on HS2 Euston. Other highlights include Sadovniki Park in Moscow and Sheaf Square in Sheffield, named ‘Great Place of the Year’ by the Academy of Urbanism. Sophie has taken part in numerous design review panels, regularly lectures on new approaches to public space design and is an examiner for the Landscape Institute. She is passionate about creating places that address the huge challenges we collectively face in the context of climate change and society.


Stephen Buckle – Studio Director, ASPECT Studios, Shanghai, China
Stephen Buckle is a Studio Director and creative lead at ASPECT Studios, an influential designer, landscape architect and urbanist recognized for his bold city shaping projects that look to challenge and disrupt the mundane, carry impact and meaning, while endeavoring to address the complex social, environmental and technical challenges faced in some of world’s most densely urbanized cities.

While all designs are derived from the same hand, each strives to be unique, drawing reflection from his perception of humanistic influences such as people, place and culture, and contextual influences such as environment, climate and land. Each of his designs strives to deliver a authentic, unique and memorable response.

Stephen’s influence and thinking has helped guide and forge the strategic direction and portfolio of the ASPECT Studios in Asia.
