Located on the northern shores of Botany Bay, La Perouse Headland provides spectacular cliff-top views across the Bay and out to sea. It is also one of the most significant Aboriginal and European cultural heritage sites in Australia. Named after the French explorer La Perouse who entered Botany Bay six days after the First Fleet, the 10.4ha Headland incorporates listed cultural heritage values protected by dedication of a National Park.
Heavy use and uncontrolled parking along the Loop Road had degraded the quality of the Headland. Randwick City Council made a commitment in 2007 to implement a major program of upgrading that included a new section of Coastal Walkway to provide safe and comfortable access for pedestrians around the Headland and connect to a regional coastal path system that will ultimately extend from Bondi Beach to La Perouse and link to the proposed Botany Bay Trail.
Corkery Consulting was engaged by Council to prepare a concept and detailed design for the proposed upgrade. A key aspect of the site immediately recognised through the site analysis was the need to maintain open views from the Headland. The 700 metre long new coastal walkway provides spectacular views, with the use of pre-cast concrete bollards providing safe separation between pedestrians and vehicles. Planting of indigenous species of ground cover and low shrubs is compatible with the coastal landscape.
The project has enhanced recreation opportunities that include walking, cycling, picnicking, fishing, scuba diving, visiting the Museum and outdoor dining on two cafe terraces along Endeavour Avenue at the northern edge of the Loop Road.
