Plans have been approved by Cambridge City Council for a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revitalise the city’s market square and surrounding streets, as part of the Cambridge Civic Quarter project.
This core part of the city has been home to the market for more than 1,000 years and will remain so for generations to come. The plans balance the significance of the historic city with contemporary needs. They include a new mix of fixed and demountable stalls, providing enhanced facilities for the current traders, as well as flexibility for civic space in front of the Guildhall.
Public realm improvements developed by LDA Design focus on making the square more accessible, an inclusive civic heart in the city centre that retains and celebrates heritage, including historic granite setts and the refurbishment of a Grade II listed central fountain. Planting brings nature, and new trees will provide much-needed shade in summer.
The wider Civic Quarter project includes the city’s Guildhall and Corn Exchange.
