Book Review | New Horizons

New Horizons – Eight Perspectives on Chinese Landscape Architecture Today provides an overview of eight emerging design firms in China and the Chinese landscape architecture profession. The book seeks to provide insights into the new generation of landscape architects in China many of whom have been educated in international design schools and now creating designs from high-dense cities to remote rural landscapes.

The book includes several essays from experts who have worked in China or studied the growth of Chinese landscape architecture. Jutta Kehrer provides insights into the Chinese Avant-garde, Ron Henderson looks at the profession in the making, Claudia Westerman offers an overview of the Chinese Landscape Aesthetics, Jeffrey Hou delves into the experimentations of Rural and Urban landscape designs in China.

New Horizons also provides interviews with the founders of eight new landscape architecture firms (Z+T Studio, YIYU, Moshang, Fu Yingbin Studio, WISTO, Clover Nature School, Instinct Fabrication and lab D+H). These interviews provide the reader with the perceptions of the founders of experiences of growing their firms and their approaches to landscape architecture in China.

New Horizons is a book for anyone who wishes to gain an insight into the new age of landscape architecture in China. This book is a well-edited and high-quality publication that not only provides vivid images of each firm’s projects along with a greater understanding of a growing profession that is transitioning from the big state institutions and large design firms to an industry that is become more diverse with smaller firms able to bring new ideas and approaches to China.
