Recently, the BIMForum released an updated version of the Level of Development (LOD) Specification (2023 Draft for Public Comment). This specification is a reference that enables practitioners in the AEC Industry to specify and provide a high level of clarity on the content and reliability of Building Information Models (BIMs) at various stages in the design and construction process[1].
The specification is not a standard but is used by many as a guide to determine the Level of Development (LOD) for BIM models. It also helps everyone (BIM Managers, Design Managers, Clients, Model Owners, etc) involved with BIM models and BIM Management Plans to easily communicate LOD at each stage of the project and also to be referenced in contracts to avoid confusion on what is expected of the deliverables.
Why is this update so important for landscape?
This update provides a major update to the landscape section (G2080) with the following:
- The inclusion of irrigation with the distinction between LOD200 and 300;
- LOD300 includes Build ups (actual thickness)
- LOD350 includes tapered edges and other inclusions (canopy clearance at maturity, staking, clear in shrub planting with zones around trees, etc.)
Although this provides a great reference, it also may mean that many landscape design firms will not go beyond LOD300 due to the greater modeling time needed for LOD350.
There is a need for landscape architects, Design Managers, and BIM Managers from the landscape architecture industry to comment on these specifications to ensure that landscape is part of the conversation to input into specifications and guides that allied design professionals and our clients will use.
The Level of Development LOD specification can be downloaded from the BIMForum. Sadly, the public comments for the specification closed on January 15, 2024. However, I would encourage readers to sign up, use their resources available, and contribute when the opportunity arises.
