Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital concept design revealed

A first look at the concept design for the new Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital project, located on Wiradjuri Country, led by international design practice Hassell, has been revealed.

Poised to become a civic landmark, the design for the transformed hospital campus will support Albury, Wodonga and Border communities now and into the future. By blending contemporary medical functionality with the healing qualities of nature, the new design is redefining patient care. Building on the hospital’s established garden culture, staff and community consultation, and informed by Wiradjuri Country narratives, nature plays a central role in enhancing the wellbeing of patients, staff and the broader community.

In consultation with Yerrabingin, the new design draws on perspectives from local Aboriginal community to reflect the region’s cultural richness. The design integrates indoor spaces with a network of open gardens and internal courtyards, connecting guests with fresh air, greenery and peaceful retreats. Engagement with Traditional Owners also shaped elements of the Clinical Services Building, including strategic sight lines to culturally significant sites.

Inside, the design focuses on humanising the healthcare experience. Warm materials like wood and natural fibres, light-filled rooms and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions create a calming environment, while a unique floor plan that integrates different health departments offers an innovative model tailored to the unique challenges of the regional health care environment.

The project consolidates complex care on one site and includes a contemporary Clinical Services Building, Northeast building, expanded landscape design, and improved parking. The design supports the needs of a wide range of complex services, including surgical theatres, women’s and children’s services, mental health services and significantly expanded inpatient bed capacity.
