WLA recently had a chance to discuss his work and landscape architecture with Daniel Woodroffe, President and Founder of dwg. located in Austin, Texas, USA.
As president and founder of dwg., Daniel has practiced landscape architecture for over twenty years. Through his award-winning firm, he has amassed a wealth of experience focusing on the urban architectural landscape. His work expresses the role and importance of creating exceptional designs that are socially, environmentally, and economically resilient.
WLA: What is your approach to landscape design?
My approach to landscape design is deeply rooted in the interplay between nature, culture, and the built environment. I love that dwg.’s design philosophy seeks to innovate and advance sustainable design solutions that not only enhance the visual appeal of a space, but also create tangible, positive change for communities. Operating at the intersection of art and science, our designs aim to bring life to a site, foster positive transformation, and encourage meaningful engagement between people and their surroundings. Whether it’s an ecological restoration, a public art installation, or a rooftop garden, we believe in disrupting the norm to cultivate unforgettable and joyful experiences. Our commitment to authenticity, creativity, and collaboration with clients and communities is at the core of our design philosophy.
WLA: What is a key issue facing the landscape architecture profession?
I believe that one of the significant challenges facing the landscape architecture profession today is an increased urgency for sustainable and resilient design AND policies in the face of environmental changes. As stewards of the public realm, landscape architects are increasingly tasked with addressing issues such as climate change, urbanization, and ecological degradation. Balancing the demands of development with the preservation and enhancement of natural ecosystems poses a complex challenge. Additionally, the profession must navigate the evolving expectations of communities and clients, as well as incorporating innovative solutions that prioritize environmental health and social well-being. I actively embrace these challenges, viewing them as opportunities to push boundaries and contribute to a more sustainable future.
WLA: How do you see the future of landscape architecture?
The future of landscape architecture holds tremendous potential for positive impact and transformative change. As the profession experiences a renaissance, akin to the Olmsted era, landscape architects are at the forefront of conversations about harmonizing the fabric and construct of cities, public realms, and the natural environment. I envision a future where landscape architecture continues to evolve, embracing innovative technologies, research, policies, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The emphasis on sustainability, climate action, resilience, and the creation of engaging, social spaces will drive landscape architecture to the forefront of planning, design, and sustainable policymaking. With an ever-growing awareness of the importance of nature in urban settings, the profession is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping healthier, more vibrant communities.
