West 8 urban design & landscape architecture has won the Land-art design competition for the Werpsterhoek junction in the Leeuwarden by-pass. The proposal that embodies a terp landscape will now be further developed. Architect Pieter Hoen: “You could say that we have made a large terp [local name for flood relief mound], thus providing a silhouette that fits in the Frisian landscape”. Particularly appealing to the jury were the simplicity and restraint applied in the design. It does not compete with the silhouette of the city, rather it provides a modest foreground.
‘Haak om Leeuwarden’ is the freeway bypass project for this city in Friesland, The Netherlands. “Shape the major intersections and their immediate vicinity of the bypass so that they fit in naturally in the Frisian countryside and make them into special and clear entrances into the city. This should be done using the large amounts of soil released by the construction of the Haak with a Land-art approach.” This was the competition brief that focused on the junction called Werpsterhoek.
According to Rijkswaterstaat, Leeuwarden, ProRail and County of Leeuwarden four clear traffic nodes should be uniquely designed for ‘de Haak’. The parties that are responsible for the developing the road, have agreed that the new road should be embedded into the Frisian landscape in the most natural way. In future, one can enter the city from ‘de Haak om Leeuwarden’ in four locations: from the west, from the north, via the connector Hemriksein and the via the Werpsterhoek junction. At this point two double lane roads meet. The jury of the contest consists of representatives from the municipality of Leeuwarden, province of Fryslân and Rijkswaterstaat. The province appointed the Atelier Fryslân to assess the entries.
‘De Haak om Leeuwarden’ is part of the Leeuwarden Vrij-Baan project. By optimalising access to Leeuwarden, the accessibility of the entire province of Fryslân will improve. This way we provide a good road network. With this mindset Rijkswaterstaat, the province of Friesland and the municipality of Leeuwarden work together under the flag of Leeuwarden Vrij-Baan, a program of 39 projects that in many respects will be a great boost to this region.
West 8 uit Rotterdam wint Land-art prijsvraag vormgeving verkeersknooppunt Werpsterhoek in Haak om Leeuwarden
“Geef de belangrijkste verkeersknooppunten en directe omgeving van de Haak om Leeuwarden zo vorm dat ze natuurlijk in het Friese landschap passen en zorg dat ze een bijzondere, duidelijke entree voor de stad vormen. Dit moet gebeuren met de vele grond die vrij komt bij de aanleg van de Haak. Gebruik en ‘shape’ op een Land-art achtige manier”. Zo luidde de prijsvraag die focust op knooppunt Werpsterhoek.
Als het aan, Rijkswaterstaat, gemeente Leeuwarden, ProRail en Provincie ligt dan heeft de stad Leeuwarden straks in de Haak vier bijzondere, duidelijke en bijzonder vormgegeven knooppunten. De partijen die samen voor de aanleg van de weg zorgen, hebben ook afgesproken dat de weg zo natuurlijk mogelijk in het Friese landschap gepast moet worden. Wie in de toekomst vanaf de Haak om Leeuwarden de stad in rijdt, kan dat doen vanaf vier punten. Via de Westelijke invalsweg, de Noordwestelijke invalsweg, de aansluiting Hemriksein of knooppunt Werpsterhoek. Hier komen twee dubbelbaans wegen bij elkaar. De jury van de prijsvraag bestaat uit vertegenwoordigers van gemeente Leeuwarden, provincie Fryslân en Rijkswaterstaat. De provincie heeft het Atelier Fryslân gevraagd de inzendingen te beoordelen..
West 8 urban design & landscape architecture is de winnaar van de prijsvraag. Het voorstel waarin een terpenlandschap centraal staat, gaan ze nu verder uitwerken.. Architect Pieter Hoen: “je zou kunnen zeggen dat we één grote terp gemaakt hebben, een silhouet dat goed past in het Friese landschap”. Wat de jury vooral aanspreekt is de eenvoud, rust en terughoudendheid. Het ontwerp concurreert niet met het silhouet van de stad, maar fungeert als een rustige voorgrond.”
De Haak om Leeuwarden is onderdeel van Leeuwarden Vrij-Baan. Door Leeuwarden optimaal te ontsluiten, wordt heel Fryslân beter bereikbaar en zorgen we voor een goed wegennet. Met die gedachte werken Rijkswaterstaat, de provincie Fryslân en de gemeente Leeuwarden samen onder de vlag Leeuwarden Vrij-Baan. Een meerjarig programma van 39 projecten dat in vele opzichten een grote impuls geeft aan deze regio.
