The Magistério Mutu-ya-Kevela, located in Luanda, Angola, occupies the former Liceu Salvador Correia, built during the Portuguese colonial period (1942). It is classified as a national monument (dispatch no. 47, July 8th, 1992) because it is a building that represents the Portuguese architecture of the Estado Novo. Abandoned for many years, the recuperation promoted by the Angolan state contemplated the building, the atria and the green spaces.
The main principles of the project were: (a) preserve the architectural identity which gives it a distinctive character; (b) adapt the space to the new functions; (c) consider safety and mobility factors; (d) integrate environmental sustainability parameters.
In this perspective, the landscape architecture project developed the following typologies of spaces:
▪ Small atria – preservation of materials and original design; introduction of furniture and lighting to ensure social activities; promotion of bioclimatic comfort; ensure the infiltration of rainwater into the soil.
▪ Large atrium – redesign and application of new materials due to changes over time; definition of an outdoor classroom space.
▪ Sports fields – rehabilitation of the Liceu sports fields, keeping the form and materials; New multi-sport field covered for sun shading and rain protection; The sports fields have physical and visual relation with the green spaces.
▪ Green spaces – definition of paths and living areas; Preservation of the existing trees and planting of new ones; Luanda has a deficit of green spaces, so there was a great effort to maintain permeable areas and to establish woodlands.
It was also considered:
▪ The tiles of the corridors (1930s / 1940s) portray themes of Portuguese culture. They have been preserved and recovered as an integral part of the identity of the place.
▪ The design of furniture to the place and the type of users.
This project intends to offer to all who pass through the Magistério Mutu-ya-Kevela a unique and memorable experience, ensuring that its distinctive character is due not only to the past but also to the present and future.
