MIT’s Norman B. Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism is pleased to announce the 2022 cycle of the Norman B. The Leventhal City Prize is awarded on a three-year cycle to an interdisciplinary team of faculty to collaborate with either a government agency, non-profit or civic leadership organization. The Norman B. Leventhal City Prize has been established in honor of Norman B. Leventhal, the visionary developer and philanthropist whose contributions transformed Boston’s urban landscape. His civic leadership drove Boston’s urban revival, resulting in projects such as Rowes Wharf, Center Plaza, South Station, and One Post Office Square. In keeping with the mission of the MIT Norman B. Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism (LCAU) the Leventhal City Prize seeks to catalyze innovative urban design and planning approaches that will improve the environment and quality of life for citizens.

In the current cycle, the Leventhal City Prize is seeking novel responses focused on Digital Urbanism. Rapidly evolving data sources and computational techniques combined with software and hardware embedded in urban environments present both opportunities and challenges for urban and ecological systems. Digital Urbanism, a new research initiative at MIT Norman B. Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism (LCAU), seeks to explore the evolving relationship between urbanism, computation, emerging technologies, and design. Making equity a central goal for this effort, we seek proposals from all geographies that aim to develop physical design solutions that advance urbanism.

Applications are accepted online only, at leventhalcityprize.mit.edu . Finalists will be invited to present to the jury at the end of June 2022.
