Vanke’s latest commercial project in Beijing – The ‘Funmix’ Shopping Centre – is aiming to change Beijing’s standard approach to shopping malls and commercial precincts. As its name suggests Vanke sees this project as possessing a little more life, vibrancy and boldness then the average project in its class.

Landfill Garden | Providence USA | L+A Landscape Architecture
A working, educational landscape that re-uses demolition debris in the construction of a “landfill garden” utilizing concrete planks sawn from an existing ash storage tank and crushed asphalt from an existing parking area, both of which were removed to make way for the new project . The use of these materials in the garden diverted approximately 90 tons of debris from Rhode Island’s Central Landfill. The garden, located to the south of the Narragansett Bay Commission’s new Operations Center, performs as a water retention and filtration system integrated with an outdoor room for staff and for educational groups that frequently tour the center.

best private plots – International Design Competition

The award best private plots – Die besten Gärten 2012 recognizes exemplary design of sustainable private outdoor spaces, highlighting the garden as a place of innovation, as a space for creative expression and action, and as contemporary dialogue between architecture, ecology and landscape.

The competition is being held for the 5th time since 2006. The award criteria include: idea, conceptual and artistic quality, ecological quality, use of plants and materials, relationship between inside and outside, delimitation of space and organization of open space, technical planning and sustainability. Special attention will also be given to individual functionality and diversity of use. The outdoor space must be clearly identifiable as intended for private residence and use.

Urban farms springing up on rooftops

All across Manhattan urban farms are springing up across one of the densely built cities in the world. Urban Farms (community gardens) are nothing new but recently they are moving up onto the rooftops across the world as urbanites want to grow their own food and cool down their buildings.

The Washington Post has an article about the Urban Farms in Manhattan and how as the city has boomed with Community Gardens being sold for development gardens have moved up onto rooftops.
