The Crown Sky Garden is a place of interaction and sanctuary for the children, families, doctors and administrators of this new hospital. For the patients and families, the garden offers an interactive area of light, water, and color.

The team worked the relationship object-surface through the materiality of space (land and pasture), local materials (chaclas), and the recovery of existing artifacts which were already familiar to users.

UNISA’s brief to the design team was to reflect a new Africanism, a site of confluence of traditional wisdom transmitted to a younger generation. The Kgorong Centre was built as a gathering place for students and gateway to the rest of the campus.

The scale and depth of the designs published in this 10 edition gives a great insight into the landscape architecture profession for professionals, students and the public. Envisioned as an urban grove, this central gathering space represents the convergence of community in this diverse, mixed income, residential development. The design accommodates a complex program, layering the varied multi-cultural and intergenerational uses with a number of meaningful gathering and recreational spaces for the residents. Tai Chi, chess, children’s play areas, and contemplative seating areas allow for various groups to utilize the garden spaces in different ways. Lawn areas can be used for sunbathing in the summer and also provide the community with areas for flexible programming during larger gatherings, such as celebrations for the Chinese New Year, Russian Unity Day, and other cultural and civic events.

Situated in the heart of downtown Chicago, the Crown Sky Garden is a sanctuary for patients, families, doctors and administrators within this 23 story Children’s Hospital. The commitment to this sky garden was built upon a growing body of scientific research which links access to natural light and contemplative spaces to reduced patient recovery time. This regenerative project offers a new paradigm for healthcare design that integrates healing gardens as part of the health care regiment within these institutional environments.
