In 2011 White arkitekter was winner of the competition for the Forumtorget project in Uppsala. The proposal, with its subdued paving, expressive sofa and generous plateau, is powerful, substantive and empathetic. Here, the people of Uppsala have a natural meeting place and an open breathing space within the built-up business district. The project will be realized in 2016 after the reconstruction of the adjacent building is finished.

Removable Seating for C-mine | Genk, Belgium | Carmela Bogman & HOSPER

Carmela Bogman, working in cooperation with HOSPER, has designed special seating for the C-mine leisure zone in Genk. The furniture is concentrated in a number of ‘clouds’ in the square, where the chairs and stools are arranged in an informal pattern. Different arrangements are thus possible for people who want to sit close together and for people who prefer to sit further apart, facing one another or with their backs to one another.
The chairs and stools, which are made of a folded stainless steel plate, glitter like diamonds against the black surface of the square. The internal and rear surfaces of the furniture are powder-coated in fire-engine red. The red surfaces of some of the chairs are lit from below, thus creating a warm glow around them at night.

The designer wanted to create a memorial while integrating functional street furniture. And so he imagined majestic sails of white oak, concrete and metal, echoing the chapter in history and to be installed where Fort Vercheres stood in 1670. The white oak was chosen by the designer as the same wood was used in the seventeenth century for the construction of sailboats and barrels.

The planning concept for the park is an expression of the traces of its past and the important moments of its history. The esplanade also highlights the spirit of place found in the contemporary urban grid of the neighborhood. The park becomes a witness to the site’s history, commemorating it through three key landscape elements: the river and its piers, the vestiges of former railways lines, and the historic city in development.

Urban Lounge | Saint-Etienne France | AWP

Our thinking about the design was based on the idea of the “urban lounge”. Having looked at a variety of living rooms, we have chosen to simplify the urban lounge to four basic elements.
