A new exhibition curated by The Building Centre and the Landscape Institute will exemplify how landscape architecture can offer sustainable solutions to the big challenges facing contemporary urban society including flooding and public health. The exhibition will feature 45 leading contemporary landscape projects from the UK and abroad. Showcasing some of the UK’s most powerful contemporary landscape projects including King’s Cross and the Olympic Park, alongside small, community-led schemes including pocket parks and community allotments, the exhibition will highlight the importance of investing in green infrastructure if our cities are to become more liveable, healthy and safe.

Jaanila Country, a masterplan by KCAP Architects & Planners has been awarded with the Habitat award for the best residential public space design in the Leningrad region (St. Petersburg), Russia. The public space of Jaanila Country has been developed in cooperation with landscape architects Felixx. It was chosen as first prize winner out of a selection of 13 nominated projects. The regional Habitat contest is hosted by the Leningrad Union of Building Organisations and has been held for the first time. It aims to honor new developments for their contribution to the public environment.

The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership and Van Alen Institute recently announced the first-ever Flatiron Plaza Holiday Design Competition, in which top designers and architects will propose dynamic structures to be installed in front of the famed Flatiron Building for the 2014 winter holiday season.
The winning design will be unveiled in November—in the North Public Plaza at Broadway, Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street—and will remain on view through the holidays as part of the Partnership’s annual “23 Days of Flatiron Cheer” programming.

The Suneden Sensory Playspace is demonstrative of what can be achieved on a modest budget, when landscape architects re-imagine standard building material into amazing new play opportunities. Suneden Sensory Playspace is the result of the imagination and innovation WAX Design and the local community. Using a tiny budget and community support, WAX Design has created an amazing 200m2 playspace that excites, simulates and challenges the various abilities of the students at the school.
The unique and entertaining designs use a host of standard building and landscape material to create a series of outdoor rooms that incorporate explorative and sensory activities that help to improve student’s body awareness, problem solving, cognition, creativity, enhance their overall learning abilities and above all increase their happiness.

The Vertical Forest project aims to build high-density tower blocks with trees within the city. The first example of a Vertical Forest is currently under construction in Milan in Porta Nuova Isola area, part of a larger redevelopment project developed by Hines Italia with two towers which are 80 metres and 112 metres tall respectively, and which will be able to hold 480 big and medium size trees, 250 small size trees, 11.000 groundcover plants and 5.000 shrubs (the equivalent of a hectare of forest).

The Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley exhibition opens February 8 at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C., showcasing a selection of newly commissioned photographs of projects by Dan Kiley (1912–2004), one of the most important and influential Modernist landscape architects of the 20th century. The retrospective runs through May 18, 2014.
