Thirty Penn State landscape architecture majors received valuable hands-on experience at Pennsylvania College of Technology’s masonry lab. The afternoon visit provided the Penn State students with the opportunity to work with materials and processes often part of their designs: brick, block, artificial stone and archways. Penn College masonry students served as instructors.

Housing & Development Board (HDB), Singapore’s public housing authority has launched a new landscape guide “not only serves to integrate designs at the precinct or town level, it also provides a comprehensive and up-to-date reference on the new standards and important landscape design principles for HDB estates.” MOS Maliki Osman also stated that “built environment is landscaped also plays an important role in creating spaces that are visually attractive and functional for the community. More than just verdant greenery, the creative use of landscape design at the precinct, neighbourhood and town levels can enhance the quality of recreational areas, add to community vibrancy and improve the ambient temperature and surroundings.”

The City of Phoenix recently held an RFQ for Margaret T. Hance Park Master Plan Design. The city received 20 submittals and short-listed to four teams lead by Weddle Gilmore, Stoss, Gould Evans and West 8.
The City of Phoenix decided that the Weddle Gilmore team as the successful submitter. Their team includes: !melk, Floor Associates, HR&A, ETM Associates, City Activators Inc., Rider Levett Bucknall, Pentagram, Kimber Lanning, Public Workshop, David Evans Assoc, Buro Happold, IAS Labs, Artistic Arborist, and RAMM.
This is an award recommendation pending final approval.

In June we published the most amazing project of 2012 – Gardens by the Bay in Singapore designed by Grant Associates which won the World Building of the Year at WAF. June also saw Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei’s 2012 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion and West 8’s Jubilee Gardens open in London.
