Mathews Nielsen’s $14.5M streetscape enhancement project for West 125th Street between Old Broadway and the Hudson River in West Harlem is now under construction. Commissioned by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and dovetailing with the West Harlem Master Plan, the project will provide better public connectivity to the West Harlem Piers park (on the Hudson between St. Clair Place and West 135th Street) and prepares for the future development of Columbia University’s Manhattanville campus expansion.

World Landscape Architecture publishes its latest edition of WLA Magazine. The 12th edition of WLA includes 12 previously unpublished projects from various firms including Martha Schwartz Partners (Cover), HOSPER, Grant Associates, ONG&ONG, ASPECT Studios, HASSELL, AECOM, Urban Initiatives with Arterial Design, Inside Outside, GROUPE IBI-CHBA, Basic City, Felixx, Mandaworks, Adept, Hosper Sweden, WSP and others. The 12th edition also includes the full data from the 2014 Outlook Survey indicating that the world is confident about the year ahead.
Projects include a diverse range of conceptual and built projects including urban hotels, office buildings, skyscrapers, residential developments, sports promenades, green belts, art installations and memorials. As usual, WLA magazine includes projects from countries including China, Singapore, Israel, USA, Canada, and Sweden.

The Urban Food Jungle is a conceptual design that responds to diminishing food security and the inefficiencies of classic urban farming models by interconnecting sustainable food production, entertainment, and culinary delight.

A key feature of the space is the recycling of the former tennis court club building. Part of the clubhouse has been retained and reused as seating platforms overlooking the playing surfaces. A new toilet block sits behind the rebound-wall providing amenity to all park users.

The project introduces the concept of Informal Landscape Armatures as a design method that provides dwellers with those that they cannot achieve on their own.

The space is gently defined and subdivided by a green structure of high grasses, colorful flowers and the existing large trees. Our water square creates a new context for the great modern building of Maaskant and the fantastic giant artwork of Karel Appel.

Bellamy Park | Vlissingen Netherlands | OKRA
The Bellamy Park, the de Ruyterplein and the Beursplein in Vlissingen form an ensemble of spaces in the context of a changing maritime town. The image of the big ships in town has disappeared. The maritime character presents itself much more refined. The town centre has enlarged itself psychologically, with the developments around the Arsenaal and the fishing harbour, and recently with redeveloped squares and streets.
Civic Space Park | Phoenix USA | AECOM
AECOM’s Phoenix-based Design + Planning studio guided the project from visioning sessions and masterplanning of the park, through complete construction observation. Work included extensive public meetings with the community to create a park that accommodates a variety of users and events, alongside a major public art commission, and various interactive water features and lighting elements.
The Southport Broadwater Parklands, with its spectacular Nerang River frontage and proximity to the Southport CBD, has long been a popular community gathering place on the Gold Coast. Realizing the potential for the parklands, the Gold Coast City Council applied for funding through the Q150 Legacy Infrastructure Program. Following the allocation of funding, which was matched by Council, AECOM was commissioned to develop the masterplan for the parklands and see the project through to the delivery of the first stage of construction.

The successful regeneration of the 2.5 hectare area, which forms part of the city’s protected World Heritage Site, has involved a complete redesign of the public space and the construction of the first major urban canal extension in the UK in a generation. The drama of the new waterway threaded through the public space is accentuated by the flanking flights of steps which turn the waterway into a stage filled with activity.
