Luxelakes Eco City | Chengdu, China | GVL (Gossamer)

Located in the burgeoning Tianfu New District of Chengdu City, Sichuan the Luxelakes Eco City is a new town integrating a mixture of residential, business, recreation and entertainment areas in a rehabilitated lakeside environment. Considering the areas lack of ecologically grounded developments the new Eco City offers a new alternative to city dwellers wanting to relocate from the city.

Based on Environmentally Sustainable Design Principles the rivers edge park integrates Sponge City principles – also known as Water Sensitive Urban Design – along a contemporary series of zigzag boardwalks. As water moves from the adjacent mixed use development it is filtered through a series of wetland landscapes before being release further downstream into the catchment. People can experience the movement and cleansing of the water as it moves through the project.

The designers intended the riverside walk to open a variety of ways to interact with the water’s edge. By seeing the built elements – board walks and lookouts – as architectural elements they are intended to contrast dramatically in form and experience to the softened landscape experience. As part of the broader Tianfu New District the Luxelakes development adds a unique landscape experience where visitors are able to enjoy an immersive and serene experience away from the bustling city.
