Intent: The client wanted a garden with different outdoor spaces so there would be places to enjoy the view, but also have areas that were shielded from the wind. The lot is steep and fairly large, so large areas were to be natural and low maintenance. We also wanted to reuse the materials on the site; to minimize and reuse water; and to keep surfaces permeable while creating a natural and modern garden.
Special Factors: Using native local stone for the wall face, the gabion baskets were backfilled with crushed concrete salvaged from the old driveway. The updated driveway was asphalted due to the steep grade, but the court yard is permeable with gravel. The best pieces of old concrete paving were salvaged and re-used as pavers for the guestroom patio. Wind felled trees were transformed into wood for fencing while the trash enclosure was constructed from wood salvaged from the old house. The steps from the gate to the house are made from the decking of the old house.
Sustainable Factors: The planting plan involved retaining nearly all of the existing trees and shrubs. The new plantings added were primarily native plants. The lawn is a native bent grass sod that is kept un-mowed and irrigated with grey water from the house. Rainwater is captured and used to fill the fountain.
