In the heart of “Tuinen van West,” a multifunctional green area on the outskirts of Amsterdam, lies The Unbound, an exclusive urban retreat that blends luxury with untamed nature. This innovative hospitality project, designed by Felixx Landscape Architects & Planners in collaboration with Studio Appelo and Dorens Architects, transforms a former wasteland into a vibrant landscape where wellness, biodiversity, and sustainability come together to create a unique experience for both tourists and locals.

A Rejuvenating Oasis Between Nature and Comfort

In 2007, Amsterdam decided to transform four polders into an area dedicated to urban agriculture and recreation, giving rise to Tuinen van West. Within this context, The Unbound represents a perfect fusion of natural surroundings and high-end hospitality. The project stands out for its ability to enhance the existing landscape, introducing diverse topographical elements such as ponds, wetlands, and hills, which support spontaneous and varied vegetation. This approach has created a rich ecosystem, attracting local wildlife and providing a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Architecture Immersed in Greenery

A large tree marks the entrance to the resort, welcoming guests to the main hotel, which is situated beside a small lake. Sauna and canoeing facilities are integrated into the water and connected by a bridge linking the hotel to the lodge forest. In this area, several tiny houses are arranged around a community building, ensuring both privacy and a sense of togetherness. The park extends into the “wellness forest,” where a natural amphitheater and an elevated yoga field offer spaces for relaxation and meditation.

Pathways to Wellness and Events
A network of trails connects the various areas of the resort, leading guests to the event field—an intimate, secluded space ideal for weddings and temporary festivals. For younger visitors, a dedicated play area offers engaging experiences in close contact with nature. Additionally, the urban agriculture vegetable garden not only enhances the landscape but also provides fresh, organic ingredients for the hotel’s restaurant, reinforcing a commitment to sustainability and local resources.

A Model for the Future of Hospitality
The Unbound Amsterdam sets a new benchmark in sustainable hospitality, demonstrating how respect for nature can coexist with luxury and well-being. A place where time slows down, offering an authentic reconnection with the environment, just a short distance from vibrant Amsterdam.
