Stoss Landscape Urbanism celebrated the opening of Thomas J Sweeney Playground on Thursday, May 29. Families from the neighborhood joined Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh in cutting the ribbon to the newly redesigned public park as children enjoyed the playground’s poured-in-place rubber surface and newly installed benches, fountains, and rope structures.

Part of the City’s Capital Improvement Plan, the $583,050, half acre Sweeney Playground project offers new life to the park, with a brightly colored synthetic surface stretched over a rippling topography of hillocks and valleys. Water jets triggered by children encourage interactive play on hot summer days. The permeable surface and infiltration basin allow for groundwater recharge during storm events.

Sweeney Playground is a continuation of the research and practice of Stoss’s interest in simple technical efficiencies and hybrid solutions that can do many things at the same time—most importantly enriching the lives and experiences of people.
