This 700-square-meter Salutogenic pocket park is designed to enhance the health and well-being of residents in Shiraz, Iran, a densely populated urban area with limited greenery. It provides a refreshing escape, fostering a serene environment that promotes physical, mental, and social health. The term “salutogenic” highlights the park’s mission to prioritize wellness and create a vibrant space that enriches the urban landscape. Thoughtfully designed features encourage active living, social interaction, and relaxation.

A.Holistic Design Categories for Health and Well-Being
a.1.Physical Health
At the heart of the park’s design is the principle of walkability. A maze-like pathway encourages visitors to explore the area, starting from the southern street and leading to the northern street. This winding path promotes physical activity, which is crucial for health.

In addition, interactive gardening areas foster community engagement and physical involvement. There are two main gardening spaces: one is a ground-level area designed for individuals without disabilities, allowing them to plant flowers, vegetables, and sunflowers. The other is a tabletop garden specifically created for older adults and individuals with disabilities, enabling them to participate in gardening without physical strain. These gardening activities not only encourage physical activity but also significantly reduce stress, providing a sense of accomplishment and a deeper connection to nature.
a.2.Mental Health
Relaxation zones within the park provide ample opportunities for visitors to connect with nature. Several designated spots, including shaded benches behind trees and a fruit garden, allow for safe seating where children can play and socialize.

A small fountain serves as a therapeutic water feature, adding both auditory and visual elements to the park. The soothing sound of flowing water promotes tranquility and enhances the multisensory experience, creating a sense of escape from the urban environment. These features contribute to mental clarity and relaxation, helping to alleviate stress and anxiety.
a.3. Social Health
Community interaction spaces are also an essential aspect of the park’s design. Benches located at the park’s entrance create a welcoming area for gathering, facilitating social interaction among diverse community members. The collaborative gardening opportunities further encourage engagement, fostering a sense of community as residents work together. By enhancing social cohesion and providing avenues for new friendships, the park plays a vital role in strengthening community bonds.

B.Design Consequences and Management Plan
The park is designed with accessibility and inclusivity at its core, ensuring that all community members can fully engage with the space. Ongoing management will prioritize the upkeep of gardens, pathways, and relaxation areas, maintaining a welcoming and functional environment. By actively involving local residents in maintenance and programming, the park fosters a sense of ownership and deepens community engagement, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere for all.
