Meet the 2018 WLA Awards Jury

WLA is very proud to have five experienced landscape architects join the jury for the 2018 WLA Awards. There expertise and knowledge will be utilised the entries in the various categories. Jurors were selected from a diverse range of backgrounds and locations from across the world. Below you can find out more about each juror:

Cheryl Barton, FASLA, FAAR, is the Founder and Director of Office of Cheryl Barton in San Francisco, USA
Cheryl leads the firm in the planning and design of revitalization strategies for urban and ecological systems – green infrastructure, parks and public places, institutional campuses and water-edge landscapes.  She is internationally recognized for her leadership in the shift toward resilient futures – her award winning work integrates design innovation and adaptive systems thinking.  Projects are commissioned by both public and private clients who are interested in building community connectivity, rehabilitating disturbed landscapes and deepening their relationship with the natural world.  Cheryl sits on the Design Review Board for the Bay Conservation and Development Commission. She holds an MLA degree from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome.

Isabel Zempel, ASLA is a Principal at Sasaki in Watertown, USA.
Isabel has led the design of high profile projects around the world, including award-winning civic and cultural landscape work in the United States, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Her work focuses on large-scale public landscapes, plazas, botanical gardens, waterfront developments, art installations, and sculpture parks, and includes current and recently completed work for both civic and private clients.

Isabel has a passion for contemporary and bold design expression of landscapes where culture, identity, and architecture form unique, poetic concepts. She is an accomplished design initiator with a consistent eye toward collaboration and integration of the arts, including frequent collaboration with artists and architects. Isabel serves as the co-chair of the urban design studio at Sasaki. She is also co-chair of the Boston Society of Architects.

Isabel received her education at the Technical University of Osnabrueck and practiced in Germany for several years. She frequently serves as a design critic for the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the Rhode Island School of Design, where she also taught her own design studio.

Nadia Amoroso, PhD, ASLA is a faculty member at the University of Guelph, Department of Landscape, School of Environmental Design and Rural Development.
She was the Lawrence Halprin Fellow at Cornell University and the Garvan Chair Visiting Professor at the University of Arkansas. She holds a PhD from the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, London,  and degrees in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design from the University of Toronto. She specializes in visual communication in landscape architecture, digital design, data visualization and creative mapping. She also operates an illustration studio, under her name, focusing on landscape architectural visual communication. She has written a number of articles and books on topics relating to creative mapping, visual representation, and digital design including, The Exposed City: Mapping the Urban Invisibles, Representing Landscapes: Digital, and more recently Representing Landscapes: Hybrid.

Peter Chmiel CMLI, is a Director of Grant Associates in Bath, UK
Peter is a director at Grant Associates, an award-winning landscape architecture firm established in 1997 and a leader in creative ecology, environmental sustainability, and innovative landscape design. With over 30 years’ experience in landscape architecture, his particular interest is the promotion of design quality and technical innovation through the synergy of landscape, architecture, nature, community, and place. Peter leads teams on a diverse range of UK and International projects and is responsible for the design direction and day-to-day management of the office, together with Andrew Grant and Keith French.  He is also actively involved in research and environmental design and has led a number of award-winning residential developments, educational schemes, cultural and heritage projects incorporating exemplary placemaking and green infrastructure strategies.

Peter studied landscape architecture at the Greenwich University, graduating in 1987. He worked for Ede Griffiths Partnership for over a decade, where he collaborated with many of UK’s leading architects and extensively on Stockley Park, the innovative remediation and reclamation of a former 416-acre landfill site into one of Europe’s most successful office parks. In 1997 Peter joined Grant Associates, working on The Earth Centre, one of the landmark millennium projects and the first visitor attraction based on the ethos of sustainable development. He has particular design and implementation interests relating to sustainable homes and creating new communities through landscape integration. Peter became a director of Grant associates in 2005 and has delivered many of the of the practices award-winning schemes

Simon Morrison MSILA, is Director of ICN DESIGN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS in Singapore.
From both public and private sectors across the globe, seeing through the implementation of numerous public realm, residential, commercial, tourism and master-planning projects provides Simon with valuable insights and experience in the value of landscape across different climates, cultures and conditions. With over twenty years’ experience in Australasia, South East Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the UK Simon has gained an extensive landscape expertise in design, landscape urbanism and master-planning. Exploring the ideas of ‘green infrastructure’, urban ecology and the potential for landscape in public health he has developed concepts and design approaches that focus on the key human spatial, physical and experiential needs of environment and health. Based in Asia, Simon’s interests centre on communicating these ideas through actual projects, with conceptual design, planning, landscape design, and leadership for civic districts, parklands, residential precincts, hotels and resort developments.

He is a Member of Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects and a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Hons) from Lincoln University, Christchurch, New Zealand.
