KERB 22 | Call for Submissions

2014_KERB22_CALL_IMAGE_WEB

Kerb Journal is in its 22nd year of publication and we are currently seeking submissions for the latest edition exploring the theme of ‘Remoteness’. Submissions close on Sunday 4th of May, 12 midnight (Australia EST) for the launch of journal in August (2014).

Kerb is an annual Landscape Architecture publication presenting works from cross-disciplinary fields produced by the RMIT University School of Architecture and Design in Melbourne, Australia. Kerb is a progressive design journal focused on contemporary Landscape Architecture issues from an international and national perspective.

Remoteness is driven by memory and assumption of the unknown; when coupled with the inherent need to leave no territory unmarked, spatial boundaries fluctuate between tangible and unquantifiable processes. Remoteness is no longer a condition that can exist solely as place.
Landscape architecture engages with space, either real or perceived, and investigates the social and ecological conditions that evoke responses. Identities are shaped by landscapes that both welcome and escape the consequences of interruption.
For those unable to experience place, representations allow access into an otherwise inaccessible world. Mappings of landscapes give suitable place to tangible elements – whilst also making sense of invisible conditions – grounding place within real space and time. However, as remote connectivity increases, physical displacement within the surrounding landscape becomes more prominent.
That is not to say that the physical landscape has no bearing on our perception of the world. Tangibility grounds remoteness. However, through dismantling spatial boundaries and exploring uncharted ground, is it possible to negotiate between landscapes that are physically real and landscapes that exist in a limitless world?
Kerb 22 seeks submissions – from landscape architecture, design, as well as broader practices – that challenge and explore the context of remoteness
