Delta Park | Greeley, USA | Mundus Bishop

This 6-acre mature, but deteriorated, park site in East Greeley is being transformed into a neighborhood hub that serves nearly 3,000 residents with high-quality outdoor space for play, recreation, gathering, and relaxation. Delta Park will boast a community shelter, inclusive play for all with climbing, swings, slides, and an accessible seesaw, a splash pad surrounded by a ‘boardwalk,’ basketball courts, sand volleyball court, soccer field, stone amphitheater, and park walkways.

MUNDUS BISHOP’s design for Delta Park is a community- centered process. Outreach is core to the design and includes working with resident experts, a coffee chat group, kids / teens groups, and the community with on-site events. Sketches, plans, imagery and translations into English, Spanish, and Somali illustrate ideas in approachable ways. This transparent community-driven process improves cross- cultural relationships and is central to the success of the project.

Residents near the park often refer to Delta as their backyard, as many reside in the high-density housing units that surround the parkspace. Through TPL’s CORE (Community Outreach with Resident Experts) program, MUNDUS BISHOP has engaged the community in robust outreach opportunities that not only inform the community-driven and culturally relevant park design, but also establish a long-term relationship with the community that will increase its access to nature and build a sense of connection, ownership, and pride.

Community partners helped to develop a vision for the park, which was presented to the larger community earlier this summer. The vision plan is the culmination of a year of community-led outreach that has included multiple events, resident-led engagement, creative placemaking / art by local artists, community surveys, and youth leadership activities. MUNDUS BISHOP‘s ‘Build-A-Park’ activity encourages participation and feedback in fun ways. The game is built upon the park’s landscape with game pieces and stickers for activities and features

Key project partners include Lutheran Family Services Immigrant Refugee and Asylee Program, Boys and Girls Club, Soccer Without Borders, High Plains Library District, the Immigrant and Refugee Center of Northern Colorado, and area schools, among others. To date, the community has prioritized a new playground, soccer, improved basketball courts, and gathering spaces for the park. MUNDUS BISHOP’s plan is currently in design phase.
