BDP’s public realm scheme for Carlos Place and Mount Street in Mayfair, London was completed back in July. The project for Grosvenor is one of a number of schemes that seek to enhance the public realm of its central London estate.

BDP has upgraded the streetscape in terms of composition, surfacing materials and furniture elements. The grandeur of this area has been revived through improvements to the pedestrian experience, the removal of clutter and the putting in place of high quality surfacing materials, by strengthening the street’s relationship to its buildings and by making Carlos Place and Mount Street Gardens better places for people.

At the heart of the scheme, an oval water feature ‘Silence’ by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, has already been unveiled outside the 5 star Connaught Hotel. This reflective installation is lined with circular glass lenses that illuminate the water feature at night and reflect light into two retained mature trees. Water is allowed to uniformly spill over the features perimeter whilst projecting jets allow a moist haze to further animate this distinctive place.

This is the first phase of Grosvenor’s programme and BDP is working on plans for the next wave of projects which are already well underway.
