When the department of Transportation closed seven blocks of Broadway to cars this summer, New Yorkers were offered an object lesson in how profoundly urban space can be altered by a few traffic barriers and a bucket of paint. Within hours, the newly pedestrianized Times Square was colonized by wanderers, nearby office workers, and tourists calling home (“You will not believe where I am standing!”).
West 8+MRIO plant 8000 pine trees in Madrid
West 8+MRIO recently started with the planting of 8,000 pine trees for the Salon the Pinos in Madrid, Spain. As part of the master plan West 8+MRIO designed for the reclaimed riverbanks and the new urban area above the M30 motorway, the Salon de Pinos will act as a spiral cord, connecting the various park areas included in the design.

West 8 have also announced that they will be participating in the Xian International Horticultural Exhibition from April 9 to October 9, 2011.
The theme of Xi’an International Horticultural Exhibition 2011 is “Harmonious Coexistence Of City And Nature “. The Exhibition will create a plant-dominated natural landscape, highlighting the history, culture and local characteristics of Xi’an, displaying the harmonious coexistence of city and nature, andexploring the future development of harmonious coexistence among human, city, landscape and nature.

The design for Papendorp Business Park, West 8 designed together with Wissing Stedebouw en Ruimtelijke Vormgeving, has won the Rietveld Award 2009. For the first time a landscape and urban design project has won the award in stead of a building.
The awards ceremony takes place on the 15th of November 2009. The Rietveld Award is a bi-annual award and aims to stimulate the quality of the built environment of the city of Utrecht.

Toronto City Council has overwhelmingly approved Waterfront Toronto’s recommendation to transform Queens Quay into a grand lakefront boulevard by replacing two lanes of traffic on the south side of the street with a beautiful linear park.
Transforming Queens Quay by creating open public space along the south side of the street with a generous new pedestrian promenade and expanded Martin Goodman Trail is part of the winning design for revitalizing the central waterfront by West 8 + DTAH.

The video includes Richard Florida, Saskia Sassen, Zef Hemel, Adriaan Geuze (WEST 8), Merijn Oudenampsen. An interesting video although most of the video is not in English it is still interesting to hear people’s views about Amsterdam which is an important city on the world stage.
