Flooding in York | February 16, 2014

Over the last few months, the UK has seen continual flooding which has seen a great deal of discussion on how to deal with the water management in the UK. Recently, Sue Illman President of the Landscape Institute has sent an open letter to Prime Minister, Rt Hon David Cameron MP.  The letter signed by 12 organisations calls for a complete rethink of water management to prevent the effect of water on villages, towns and cities of the England and Wales.

The letter goes on to call for ” an immediate cross departmental conference with DECC, DEFRA, DCLG, the EA and NRW, in a similar manner to that which was convened to address the problem of ash-dieback.”. It also calls for proper exploration of the larger catchment management issues, and how forestry, land management and soft engineered flood alleviation schemes can hold back water in the upper reaches of rivers, and work alongside a dredging programme in the lower reaches.

The letter was also sent to the Rt Hon Owen Paterson MP, Anne McIntosh MP and Lord Smith, chairman of the Environment Agency.

The Rees and Simcoe WaveDecks represent a true integration of structure, architecture and landscape combined to offer completely flexible public spaces that have been embraced by a broad cross section of the general public. Rees WaveDeck is a contemplative space which gracefully bows down to the lake. The deck is fully accessible, with no slopes steeper than 5%. The amphitheatre-like steps can be used as a passive sitting place, or as an active learning space and canoe launch for summer camps or the nearby sailing school and Disabled Sailing Association.

Winterfest

Penn’s Landing’s Blue Cross RiverRink celebrates 20 years of ice skating on the Delaware River by transforming the annual waterfront rink into a veritable winter wonderland. In conjunction with Delaware River Waterfront, the skating rink location was transformed by Groundswell into a daily wintertime festival with shipping containers repurposed into retail shops, and food and drink served in a fabricated forest setting with Pine, Spruce and Holly trees, fire pits, rustic seating and signage. For 37 days throughout the holiday season, the waterfront hosted a pop-up holiday village.   Philadelphia’s newest holiday tradition, Waterfront Winterfest at the Blue Cross RiverRink, reimagined how you celebrate the holidays.

In 1865, Sir Joseph Bazalgette’s London sewage system was opened. 150 years later the sewers are at the limits of their capacity. In 2012, 57 combined sewer overflows discharged 39 million tonnes of sewage into the River Thames. Over the next 10 years Thames Water is planning major improvements to the London sewer system. These improvements will help protect the Thames from increasing pollution for at least the next 100 years.

The new Far East Organization Children’s Garden opened yesterday (21 January),  at Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay designed by Grant Associates. A major new feature of the 54 hectare Bay South Garden, the Far East Organization Children’s Garden will offer a one-hectare mix of play experiences for all ages, including water play, rainforest tree houses, ridge top trails and topiary pergola arches all in a special garden setting overlooking the Marina Reservoir.

WLA spoke to Andrew Grant from Grant Associates about this new feature at Gardens by the Bay.
WLA: Designing a space like the Far East Organization Children’s Garden must have been fun. As designers what was the fun part of the process of designing the garden?
Andrew Grant: To have the opportunity to develop a bespoke play space is a pretty special task in this age of off the shelf play packages, play equipment and risk management. We have had enormous fun imagining new play challenges and ideas for this project, not all of which found their way into the final scheme.

A 30-acre site of underutilized space located beneath a multi-level interchange in San Francisco, CA is envisioned as a highly productive sequestering urban forest that humanizes the street level making it accessible, safe, and enjoyable for the public. The design had three primary goals. 1) Combine time, process, and ecology to offset CO2 emissions from the freeway while creating a memorable place. 2) Reduce persistent flooding on this former marshland. 3) Reconnect 2 neighborhoods to each other and to the city’s largest Farmer’s Market.
