Like a baroque garden that makes a connection between heaven and earth with mirror-like pools and broderie parterres, so Topotek 1’s design for the ‘théâtre de signes’ makes a connection from the physical to the virtual world, with the structure of new broderie bosquets. The shape of the garden as viewed from the air is part of a coded language, providing new characters for a contemporary reading.

In June 2007 BURNS + NICE won a design competition for the re-design of Leicester Square, organised by Westminster City Council. The square is the home of British cinema staging over 50 film premières every year as well as a number other large scale events throughout the year. It attracts approximately two million visitors each week. Together with its side streets the square accommodates 250 servicing deliveries every morning, over 35 al fresco dining pitches, the largest cinemas and casinos in the UK and five hotels, with another two large ones planned. In combination these activities make the Leicester Square City Quarter a challenging and multi-layered urban environment.

The New York City AIDS Memorial organization recently announced that Community Board 2 has voted in favor of the new design for a memorial. The memorial will honor the 100,000+ New York City residents lost to AIDS and recognize the ongoing epidemic.

Perkins+Will’s new Atlanta office presented the opportunity to transform an existing building in the heart of Midtown by both reusing the building’s worthy assets and correcting its signature faults. Recently certified LEED Platinum, with the highest score ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere, the success of the project suggests that reuse and renovation is central to the concept of sustainability. While earning accolades for excellence in building design, one of the project’s most profound features is its renewed connection to the street. Like the building, the site design represents the humanistic values and sustainable aspirations of the firm through open, welcoming spaces and material and detail choices.

City Park in Bradford, designed by Gillespies landscape architects and urban designers on behalf of Bradford Council and supported by a multi-disciplinary design team, was officially launched on March 24th 2012. The landmark public space contains the largest city-centre water feature anywhere in the UK, a 4,000sq m mirror pool, and the UK’s tallest urban fountain which reaches a spectacular 100ft.
