Gateway to Brooklyn
New York City is already home to many of the world’s greatest public spaces including Central Park, Prospect Park and of course, the High Line. So when Mayor de Blasio announced a set of initiatives to “reinvent the Brooklyn Strand” – a series of underutilized and disconnected public spaces and City-owned lots – a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity presented itself. This project will not only add another name to that accomplished list, but more importantly create a grand gateway befitting the County of Kings.

Adobe’s newest Metro Salt Lake City campus was selected on the planned lightrail line in the South Valley City of Lehi. Wallace Roberts & Todd (WRT) worked with architects, WRNS Studio to create a master plan to accommodate future growth of the 40 acre campus, with this project being the initial phase. The site development strategy calls for surface parking serving as a potential land-banking mechanism to be eventually replaced by buildings or more compact structured parking. The first phase included the campus’s first office building with central public functions of arrival lobby, an employee café that features locally grown food, recreation — including a full NBA-sized indoor basketball court, service and central public atrium space with associated circulation, parking, arrival courts and outdoor gathering and recreation uses.

B’nai Jeshurun Congregation is a synagogue that has been serving the Cleveland, Ohio area for almost 150 years. Located in Pepper Pike, Ohio, the synagogue is a large facility that holds several religious, educational and social events throughout the year. In 2013 the congregation asked landscape architecture firm Cawrse and Associates, Inc. to redesign the synagogue’s auto court and ceremonial courtyard. At that time, the auto court spanned the entire length of the building, which consisted of 40-year old crabapple trees, degraded concrete pavement and corroding concrete bollard lighting. These elements created an unwelcoming space that had not been used by the congregation in decades.

Van Alen Institute and the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA) have released the key strategies developed through Future Ground, a competition to generate design and policy strategies for vacant land reuse.
Over the course of six months in 2015, the three winning multidisciplinary design teams – NOLEX, PaD, and STOSS – tackled fundamental questions not only about vacant land, but also about creating more equitable cities: How can we build unconventional partnerships to improve quality of life in underserved communities?

Philadelphia’s hottest open air restaurant, the Independence Beer Garden (IBG) is located in the heart of historic Philadelphia. Spearheaded by Groundswell Design Group and Philadelphia’s own restaurateur, Michael Schulson, IBG pushed the boundaries of urban revitalization. Groundswell’s ability to reinvigorate underutilized space is showcased with this 20,000 sq ft beer garden.

This small contemporary garden healed-back a site that had simple program requirements of privacy and use ability. This contemporary home is situated in an established and dense 1920’s neighborhood. This garden is “wedged” between two multi-story traditional homes and required seclusion for the residents to use the interior and exterior spaces without compromising views from above or the side. To address the scope of this private garden, the design uses a grove of 20’ tall bamboo which acts as a beautiful, evergreen privacy screen by blocking the field of vision from the adjacent second story windows of neighboring houses.

Steeple Chase Farms, a 13 acre private residential horse farm located in Greenwich, CT, includes a 7,000 sq. ft. home, stables, indoor riding arena, grazing paddocks, run-in sheds and an equipment garage with groom’s quarters. The architecture, inspired by the late 19th century shingle style homes made popular by the likes of Stanford White and H.H. Richardson, was carefully fitted to the topography in collaboration with Architect Paul Marchese. The goal was to create a working equestrian facility for this client and her family while incorporating all of the comforts of home in a residential setting.
