2014 Maeder-York Family Fellowship Landscape Studies

MY-FellowshipThe Maeder-York Family Fellowship recognizes an emerging designer whose work articulates the potential for landscape as a medium of design in the public realm. The residential Fellowship is awarded through a juried international portfolio competition and builds upon the Gardner’s Artist-in Residence programs that have fostered creativity and collaboration in the arts for over two decades.

In 2014, The Maeder-York Family Fellow in Landscape Studies will be in residence in one of the Renzo Piano-designed apartments at the Museum for three months during the summer. A public event centering on a discussion of their work is scheduled for the evening of June 12, 2014.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Opens Historic Monks Garden Redesigned by Michael Van Valkenburgh

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum unveiled today the Museum’s historic Monks Garden redesigned by Michael Van Valkenburgh. The Garden, which was originally designed by Isabella Stewart Gardner during the installation of the Museum in 1901, has been reinstalled several times since that time. Van Valkenburgh was commissioned in 2012 to redesign the cloistered garden adjacent to the historic building and connected to the exterior gardens which surround the Museum’s new wing designed by Renzo Piano.

With the opening of her Boston home in 1903, Isabella Stewart Gardner “presented a new context for art in America by creating a museum where visitors experienced music, the beauty of gardens, and historic and contemporary art, all in the highly personal setting of her courtyard palace.” Over a century later, the expansion of the Museum was undertaken to enhance these inspiring encounters with music, gardens, and art as well as support the curatorial, educational, and visitor service mission of the Museum.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum appoints Michael Van Valkenburgh to redesign Monks Garden

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum announced recently that Michael Van Valkenburgh has been commissioned to redesign its Monks Garden, the cloistered garden adjacent to the historic building
and connected to the exterior gardens which surround the Museum’s new wing designed by Renzo Piano.

Reflecting on the potential for the garden to expand the experience of the Museum, Michael said, “I share with Isabella Stewart Gardner a love of horticulture and art. The redesign of the Monks Garden is a wonderful opportunity to bring these two interests together. I look forward to working with the Gardner staff to create a memorable and enduring garden and a place Bostonians will hopefully cherish.”

Valletta to lose 400 parking spots to Renzo Piano’s plans

Times of Malta reports

City Gate’s regeneration will see 400 parking spaces lost, the investments ministry said, and not 2,000 as claimed by the Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises, GRTU.

The plans by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano will do away with the parking spaces in St James Ditch and Freedom Square, Valletta, an issue of concern for Valletta shop owners and office workers
