We announced the Public Open Space At Cronton Colliery – Ideas Masterplan Competition back in January. The Land Trust’s international design competition attracted 50 entries from all over the world, including innovative projects designed by teams in South Korea, Japan and Italy. Eye of Africa is a residential golf community in Johannesburg, South Africa. Landscape Architects Uys & White (Pty) Ltd was briefed for the development of an appropriate park system which is sensitive to the environment and will provide for the needs of residents, the development of a landscape and streetscape theme which is generated by the natural Highveld environment. Uys & White won a 2011 Corobrik-ILASA Award of Excellence in the category Planning & Design for Eye of Africa Phase 1. Within this context an open competition was launched, aimed at finding and developing ‘urban oases’. The winning projects are the ‘bimbaum’ and the ‘flowerflash’ by xarchitekten + henning grahn. The projects offer new strategies for temporary and flexible plantation in addition to conventional greening. they activate urban sites which are not adequate for permanent vegetation.
